Baking Powder Biscuits

Quick, simple and tasty.

Yield: Makes 12 biscuits

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbs. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 5 Tbs. vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt
  3. Add shortening and cut into dry ingredients with two knives or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal
  4. Make a well in center and gradually add milk, stirring until a soft dough forms
  5. Turn out onto lightly floured board and knead lightly for 30 seconds
  6. Roll out 1/2 to 3/4-inch thick
  7. Cut with a floured biscuit cutter
  8. Arrange on greased baking sheet
  9. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown

Butter is much better for you than the shortening...and tastes much better too...also, can cut butter to 2-3 tbsp and will taste just as wonderful ;)

Are you kidding? Vegetable shortening? Oh sure spare the calories and have a heart attack -- hydrogenated fat is bad for us and we now know that!
