Our resident dietitian, Mary Hartley, RD, told us that for menopausal women, a one-pound per year weight gain during this decade can be normal because the hormone change can place fat around the mid-section. This is not, however, the primary reason, and reduced exercise and altered eating habits can also play a role (at any age). Mary advises that 30-60 minutes of aerobic exercise most days of the week can help to increase your metabolism, as well as adding a strength training regimen two or three times each week.
