Pawnshops may not fit stereotype

Pawnshops traditionally have a shady reputation, but as pawnbroker Peter McDonald likes to point out, his customers come inside from Mercedes-Benz, SUVs, pickups, BMWs and minivans alike. 
“For so many years, people thought we dealt with junk, that we were just old guys behind bars, smoking cigarettes,” said McDonald, owner of Frederick Jewelry and Loan. “And that’s not the case.”
The best part of working at a pawnshop, he said, is being able to help people in need. Eighty-eight percent of pawnbrokers cite pawn loans as their most common transaction, when people bring in an item in return for a cash loan, according to the National Pawnbrokers Association 2013 trend survey.
“You really do get to help people, there’s people that are in a bind,” McDonald said. “They don’t want to sell their stuff, they just want a loan. There’s a million other places they would rather be than standing in front of you asking for money. It’s a humbling experience. We do our sincere best to make sure they are comfortable.”
Pawnbrokers hold the item for a certain amount of time, giving the customer time to repay the loan with interest. If the deadline to reclaim is not met, the item moves to the floor for sale and the loan is kept as payment in full. According to the National Pawnbroker Association, 80 percent of loans are repaid from pawnshops, which may stem from pawnshops average loans being $150.   
This short-term credit system that doesn’t require a credit check can help when people are in a bind, such as when phone bills need to be paid before it gets shut off, said Tony Smith outside of Famous Pawnbrokers at 1409 W. Patrick St. He used the system when he needed quick money, but now he goes in to pawnshops looking for good deals on jewelry. 
Other than loans, pawnshops will also immediately take in items that people no longer need, use or want, and if they are of value, brokers will exchange them for cash on the spot, McDonald said. In his store, his merchandise includes Tiffany & Co.’s jewelry, vintage musical instruments, historical artifacts, high-end watches, DVDs, jerseys and more. The only difference from other stores: they were previously owned, but that means the deals are better. 
Though watch-enthusiast Wayne Zimmerman said yard sales and some antique shops will beat pawnshops’ prices, they are some of the best places to go for good finds, but he knows there is a stigma attached to them. 
“The poor people that come into the pawnshops are pretty destitute. They are pretty bad off,” Zimmerman said. “I see people who come in trying to get $5. (But) the guys (working) are great.”
McDonald said shows such as History Channel’s “Pawn Stars” are helping to dispel myths about pawnshops, and he believes the more people know about pawnbrokers, they will be more open to coming inside. 
“We’re insured, we’re bonded, we’re highly regulated by the state,” he said. “We do a lot of research, so we don’t rip people off. We would much rather sell something for a little less than for too much, because we (rely on) word-of-mouth referrals.”
There’s also an assumption that people steal items then pawn them, but only a tenth of 1 percent of pawned merchandise is stolen, according to National Pawnbrokers Association. All Frederick pawnbrokers require identification and report the item to law enforcement, and then hold the item for 30 days, which helps turn away illegally acquired items. 
Joe Jackson has sold and bought items at pawnshops because he said it’s a fair deal, especially compared to Internet sites such as eBay and Craigslist. 
“I think it’s pretty fair for what you’re getting because it’s on the spot, like on eBay I’ve got to pay eBay fees, then I’ve got to try to sell it, then ship it out,” Jackson, a Google business photos representative, said. “You can get a good deal in here, out of anywhere else, other than Craigslist, and this is way safer than dealing with someone on Craigslist; you don’t have to meet with strangers, and you at least get a receipt.” 
Merchandise in pawnshops is varied, which doesn’t usually make them a destination place for a specific item. McDonald said he is always looking for special pieces to make sure people keep stopping in. 
“You never know what you’re going to find,” he said. “If you think we wouldn’t take it, it’s probably what we want to see.”

Coles fits the "sterotype" of a dirty run down shop with the employers haggling up as hard as they can. Went to buy a TV there for the spare bed room and it said $100 for a old 40inch. I said $60 and he said $100 and then I said $70 and he said $110. I got almost the same TV on Craigslist for $30.

Objects that incorporate sensors and internal computing capacity and are equipped with Internet connectivity, which together enable collection of data on the user, seem today to be driving growth in the mobile accessories industry. And French people appear to be embracing this movement. According to a survey carried out on behalf of Microsoft by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) among 1,050 French people aged 18 and over, more than six people out of ten (61%) are familiar with the concept of ‘connected objects’. Moreover the vast majority of those polled are attracted to these devices, with 82% agreeing that connected objects are useful and make their everyday lives easier. Close to eight out of ten even say that they represent a real digital revolution. Meanwhile a forecast from market research institute GfK indicates that sales of smartphones are likely to reach close to 18 million units in France in 2014, making them once again the highest-selling information and communication technology product in the country this year.  With a total of 35 million units in circulation in France in 2014, smartphones are also giving rise to a range of related accessories, with the ‘smart’ watch topping the list.replica watches on sale

Connected watches took pride of place at the Mobile World Congress 2014 – the world’s largest mobile telecoms conference and exhibition – in Barcelona earlier this year. A problem I have with Swiss luxury watch brands focusing on these niche techniques to battle watch replicas is the message it can have to some consumers. If Carl F. Bucherer has to resort to hidden nano-structures in order to battle fakes it sounds like the fakes out there are pretty good. That couldn’t be father from the truth. It is true that I personally represent a more sophisticated class of watch lover, but I don’t think that most people putting a real or fake Carl F. Bucherer movement next to each other would be fooled by the replica model. In fact, even if fake Carl F. Bucherer watches exists, I don’t think anyone is clever enough to copy the look and feel of their in-house made movements.
While techniques like CLR-LIGA are impressive and add value to a luxury watch, asserting their purpose as security doesn’t always seem to frame the replica watch issue as well as it could. Look for CLR-LIGA imagery on Carl F. Bucherer A1000 caliber movements and others starting in 2014. It is entirely possible that if the technique proves popular, other watch brands will also work with Mimotec and follow suit.

Howell: Cotton ekes out small gains as new balance sheet updates eyed Posted:  June 15, 2014 - 12:03am

new balance July edged up 12 points for the week ended Thursday to close at 85.62 cents, while December gained 21 points to settle at 77.83 cents. Spread trading accounted for up to 72 percent of volumes as high as 56,925 lots, largest one-day turnover since Feb. 10.
new balance July fell to a low of 84.07 cents on Tuesday and December to 76.50 cents on Wednesday, day of the supply-demand report. The July low was its second lowest — slightly above 83.86 on May 28 — since Jan. 15 and the December low was its lowest since Feb. 27.

The forecast stocks-to-use ratio of 32 percent would be the highest in six years, up from 19 percent now estimated for 2013-14.
The marketing year average price received by producers is projected to range from 60 to 80 cents, down 3 cents on both ends of the range. At the midpoint of 70 cents, prices would be down 10 percent from 2013-14.
Globally, 2014-15 beginning stocks rose by 1.09 million bales to 99 million, which was responsible for a 1.05-million bale increase in ending stocks to a new record high of 102.71 million.
Production and consumption showed equivalent increases of 460,000 bales to 115.92 million and 112.29 million, respectively, while world trade fell 2 percent to 35.6 million bales.
For 2013-14, world ending stocks are forecast up 1.1 percent from a month ago, largely on a million-bale increase to 118.13 million in the crop, with India’s output up by that amount to 30.5 million bales.
China’s expected imports rose by 750,000 bales to 13.5 million for 2013-14 and fell 500,000 bales to 8 million for 2014-15. Ending stocks there are projected at 60.31 million bales this season and 60.76 million, or 59 percent, of the world carryout next season.
On the U.S. demand scene, weekly export sales slowed to 42,500 running bales for shipment this season. This brought 2013-14 commitments to 10.513 million, 103 percent of the new forecast.
Shipments of 189,700 bales boosted exports for the season to 9.215 million, 90 percent of the estimate. To achieve the forecast, weekly shipments need to average roughly 138,700 bales.
New-crop sales of 74,700 bales raised 2014-15 commitments to 2.242 million, 24 percent of the projection and up from forward bookings a year ago of 1.922 million bales.
Anticipating lower prices, Chinese mills are reported buying only enough cotton to cover their immediate needs, while also attempting to reduce yarn inventories, USDA analysts say.
Purchases from China’s state reserve have fallen in recent weeks amid market perceptions that government sale prices may be lowered, competition from foreign cotton and prospects for lower-priced new-crop supplies.
With little incentive to hold old-crop cotton in the face of significant new-crop discounts, merchants are selling foreign cotton aggressively, offering Chinese mills an attractive alternative to buying from the state reserve.
Looking to next season, China’s internal prices are likely to remain under pressure under the new policy, either until they reach a market-clearing level or the government intervenes, USDA analysts indicated.
On the U.S. crop scene, cotton in good to excellent condition totaled 50 percent as of June 8, up from 42 percent a year ago.
The report showed 37 percent fair, even with a year ago, and 13 percent poor to very poor, down from 21 percent last year. The ratings translated into a DTN cotton index of 166, up from 156 a year ago.
Eight percent was squaring, up from 6 percent a year ago but behind the five-year average of 10 percent. Planting at 89 percent complete was up from 87 percent a year ago but behind 91 percent on average.
U.S. upland growers had contracted about 6 percent of their expected acreage by June 1, down from 11 percent a year ago and the smallest since they’d booked only about 2 percent in 2009.
The estimates are based on informal surveys by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service and the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s March prospective plantings report.
Contracting by regions included 12 percent in the Southeast, down from 29 percent a year ago; 5 percent in the Mid-South, down from 16 percent; 4 percent in the Southwest, up from 2 percent; and less than 0.5 percent in the West, down from 2 percent.
Meanwhile, trend-following funds sold 4,934 lots in futures-options combined during the week ended June 3, reducing their net longs by 30.8 percent to 24,030 lots.
This was their smallest net long position since Dec. 10, a week after they had reversed from net short to net long. Index funds sold 863 lots to cut their net longs to 62,787 lots, while traders with non-reportable positions bought a net 332 lots to up theirs to 2,293 lots.
Commercials bought 5,466 lots, adding 3,496 longs and covering 1,970 shorts to reduce their net shorts to 89,111 lots.

nike free 5.0 Online Sale Second, Beats’ popularity was driven by celebrity endorsements—the right kind of celebrity endorsements. It got them around the necks of musicians and basketball players. This added not just the imprimatur of authority, but also cool. Google Glass tried to get some similar juice putting its future-specs on models and fashionistas. That was dumb. It looked forced. Fashion takes its cues from the street, and vice versa. It also put them on mountain climbers (who?) scientists (double who?) and, sure, even the occasional musician. (Hi, Young Guru.)
But Google missed a clear and compelling use case: Athletes. It’s done a little of this (see: Bethanie Mattek-Sands ) but it needs to go much, much bigger.
Take Golf. There’s a Glassware app called GolfSight that helps you navigate your way around a course, with distances to greens, information about hazards and the like. When Golf Digest editor Luke Kerr-Dineen tried it out, he wrote “I was struck by how clear it was that this, or some close variation of it, really was the future of golf .” See, the problem here is that a nerdy Golf Digest editor said this in Golf Digest , when it should have been Tiger Woods saying it to a TV camera, while wearing Google Glass Tiger Edition, as Hideki Matsuyama casually sinks a putt in the background while wearing Google Glass Matsuyama Fever Edition and Harris English is just off camera asking his caddy if he ought to pair GlassGolfShade UV factor two or GlassGolfShade UV factor four today on his Google Glass UGA Collegiate Edition.

There’s a Glass app for Strava, which means every cyclist even in contention for the Tour ought to have a set on his face, even if it’s only on training rides, or while warming up on the rollers before a time trial, with all the worlds’ cameras pointed at him. And while we’re at it, can’t we get Glass apps for more egalitarian sports? Golf and cycling aren’t exactly hotbeds of diversity and youth culture. Glass needs to come to baseball, football, basketball, skateboarding, and snowboarding. You know, for the kids.
While there’s not a Glass app that helps you with pitch counts and batter information, Google should team up to crank one out, and then get them on Hunter Pence’s mug and make sure he’s wearing his Google Glass Giants Team Edition at every photo opp, and in every appearance he has. Why isn’t Shaun White wearing Google Glass Oakley Airwaves? I mean, sure his best days as an athlete may be behind him, but dude can still move some product. Heads-up displays inside goggles are already a thing on the slopes and in the half-pipes, and Google could own this niche by throwing enough cash around.
And, look, in many cases, you won’t be able to get athletes using them in competition. But you know what: Who cares if Lil Wayne is actually wearing Beats in the studio, as long as he’s wearing them in public? And similarly, who cares if Tiger can’t (or won’t) wear them while he’s teeing off at Augusta’s Amen Corner, as long as he’s wearing them on a practice round?
When Air Jordans first came out in 1985, they looked bizarre. But we bought them in droves because we wanted to Be Like Mike. We still do. We bought enough Beats to beat down the naysayers who said their headphones were crap because we wanted to Be Like Dre.
I’m officially ambivalent about Glass as it is , but I share Kerr-Dineen’s take that it—or something like it—is the future, and not just of golf.
Yes, it needs more compelling apps. And, oh God, yes, it has to look more fashionable and come in a wider array of styles. But mostly, it needs new and better marketing. You can sell anything with the right marketing. Even Glass.
