BACKGROUND Start the Diet Now Advertisement

The Mayo Clinic Diet is a book written by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. This book outlines the Mayo Clinic method of losing weight in a healthy way.

The Mayo Clinic has become a well known resource for health and nutrition. This diet claims to be the last method of weight loss you will ever need. The program is divided into two easy phases to help with your weight loss.

The first phase is called Lose It! and is designed to help you lose six to ten pounds in your first two weeks. You will continue eating the foods you love, but in moderation.

The second phase of the program is Live It! and helps with continued weight loss of one to two pounds per week. The Mayo Clinic Diet is credited with providing lasting results that will enable you to keep the weight off once and for all.

There are no difficult or expensive ingredients required with the diet, and you are able to follow it because it is simple and easy. The book includes meal planners, recipes, tips for overcoming challenges, starting an exercise plan and much more.

The Mayo Clinic also has a previous guide, [Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody ]( http://www.dietsinreview.com/diets/Mayo_Clinic/ "Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody ") to weight loss and general wellness, which also features the trademark Mayo Clinic Food Guide Pyramid.

DIET and NUTRITION

During the use of the Mayo Clinic Diet, you are placed through two different phases. During the first phase, you are encouraged to implement three easy steps.

The first phase of Lose It! lasts for two weeks. During those two weeks, you should add five habits, break five habits and adopt five bonus habits. These steps are the blueprint for losing weight in the first two weeks of the program. You may find some of the new habits challenging and it may be difficult to break some old habits. You will find that once you do this, the weight will come off.

The eating plan is based on the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid. From bottom to top, the foods listed in the pyramid include fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates, protein and dairy, fats and sweets. It is important that more of your foods come from the food groups at the base of the pyramid and less from the groups at the top. A sample day of eating on the program might include:

  • Breakfast: Oatmeal and an orange
  • Lunch: Vegetable soup, lettuce salad with dressing and yogurt with berries
  • Dinner: Grilled chicken breast, baby potatoes, steamed broccoli, and a pear
  • Snack: Microwave popcorn
EXERCISE

Daily activity is an important part of being healthy, losing weight and keeping that weight off. The Mayo Clinic Diet does recommend some sort of daily activity and has even implemented that into their food pyramid. There aren’t really any stipulations on what activity you do, as long as you do it for the right amount of time and on a regular basis.

The diet recommends you get in 30-60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise most days of the week. These exercises should increase your heart rate and lead you to have a light sweat while doing them. Some examples of the exercises that can help with this are:

  • Brisk walking
  • Jogging
  • Dancing
  • Aerobics
  • Elliptical machines or step machines
CONCLUSION

The Mayo Clinic Diet is one that you can rely on to reach your weight loss goals. It’s important to realize that this program is not just for temporary weight loss, but actually a way of life.

The best way to lose weight and keep it off on any plan is to commit to changing your habits for good. That’s why as the first part of the program, the Mayo Clinic Diet has you work on changing your habits. The bad habits that you’ve always had have gotten you to the current health situation you are in, so the program has you implement new healthy habits and eliminate some of those destructive ones. As you progress on the plan, you receive more leniency on food.

The first two weeks of the plan can be pretty strict, but that is necessary to give your body the proper preparation for getting healthy. You will find that the Mayo Clinic Diet is based on years of research and effective practices that have allowed great results for so many others.
