BACKGROUND Start the Diet Now Advertisement

Leave it to celebrities to popularize wacky fad diets.

The Purple Diet, reportedly followed by singer Mariah Carey, is a nutrition plan in which you eat nothing but, you guessed it - purple-colored foods.

Rich in antioxidants, the Purple Diet has gained notorieity as the micronutrient, resveratrol was found to have powerful anti-oxidizing and anti-aging benefits. Resveratrol is a nutrient found in purple and red foods, most notably, red grapes. It is believed to support collagen synthesis, which is essential for skin renewal.

The goal of the Purple Diet isn't so much on weight loss as it is on anti-aging and restoring a youthful glow to your skin and appearance.

  • Limited amount of time for diet makes it somewhat practical to follow
  • Promotes a natural-foods diet with no refined or processed foods
  • Very earth-friendly

  • Healthier than taking a synthetic resevertrol supplement
CON
  • Benefits may not be long-standing unless purple foods are eaten on a regular basis
  • Very restrictive

CONCLUSION

The Purple Diet is a fad diet, albeit a healthy one, which restricts what you can eat for three days to only natual purple-hued foods. So purple Mountain Dew, grape Popsicles and Jolly Joes candies don't make the cut.

While this diet gets high marks for its inclusion of super healthy fruits and vegetables, it is nonetheless a fad diet. If you want to reap the antiaging benefits of resvertrol-containing purple foods, simply add a few plums, red grapes and a glass of red wine to your weekly eating routine rather than following such a restrictive diet for three days.
