BACKGROUND Start the Diet Now Advertisement

Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual is a pocket guide of rules for eating wisely, written by green-eating guru Michael Pollan. Like all of his previous works, Pollan did his research for Food Rules by scouring the world for food adages, food mantras and food advice.

Food Rules is a compendium of such rules, across cultures and also time. Some of the rules readers have sent to Pollan are specifically about navigating the modern food landscape:

  • “It’s not food if it comes to you through the window of a car.” - “Don’t eat at any restaurant of which there is more than just one.”
  • "A snack is not the same thing as a treat."

These are just a few examples of this insightful and fascinating read.

Food Rules offers helpful information for eaters, whether you’re at the supermarket, or dining at an all-you-can-eat buffet. You can become more mindful of how to eat no matter what situation you find yourself in with this helpful guide.

Michael Pollan has written other books dealing with food and is currently a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also the author of the groundbreaking book In Defense of Food, which promotes eating a plant-based diet and unveils many of the hidden practices of the American food industry.
