DIET and NUTRITION

If you're already familiar with the South Beach Diet then you'll be delighted at the newly expanded food selections, which include 40 new recipes and two full weeks of all-new meal plans for Phase 1 and 2.

The overall plan of the South Beach Diet has not changed with this updated version. The emphasis on lean proteins, low-starch veggies, and low-fat dairy still comprises the crux of this diet.

Similar to the initial South Beach Diet, you will eat three meals a day and small snacks when needed. The plan is also split into its two trademark phases. Phase 1 is the stricter phase, allowing you to only eat low glycemic veggies, lean proteins and small amounts of fat. Phase 1, which lasts two weeks, is followed by Phase 2, which adds a bit more leniency to what you can eat. Whole grains, fruit and alcohol are allowed in addition to all of the foods in Phase 1, but only in moderation.

Phase 1 of Supercharged includes more meat, poultry, vegetables, beverages, desserts, soy foods, legumes, healthy fats, and prepared foods. Phase 2 includes everything in Phase 1, plus more fruits, starches, and a little alcohol.

Even if you're a vegetarian or a picky eater, you can customize your own meatless menu. Below is a snapshot of meals you can eat during each phase of the program:

Phase 1

  • Breakfast: 6 ounces tomato juice; 1 poached egg with smoked salmon; ½ cup of spinach cooked in olive oil
  • AM Snack: Celery with low-fat cheese spread
  • Lunch: Tossed salad with romaine lettuce, smoked chicken, 1/3 small avocado, tomatoes, onion and cooked turkey bacon; 2 tablespoons low-sugar salad dressing
  • PM Snack: ½ cup shelled edamame with sea salt
  • Dinner: Roasted rotisserie chicken; tossed salad with mixed greens, chopped cucumber and cherry tomatoes; roasted artichoke hearts cooked with olive oil and black pepper
  • Dessert: Vanilla chill, with sprinkle of cinnamon, blended until frothy (recipe included in book)

Phase 2

  • Breakfast: 6 ounces tomato juice; 4 ounces artificially sweetened fat-free or low-fat yogurt; Irish oatmeal with cinnamon and walnuts; coffee or tea with 1% or fat-free milk and sugar substitute
  • AM Snack: ¾ cup strawberries and latte with fat-free milk
  • Lunch: Thai Shrimp Soup; tossed salad with mixed greens, chopped cucumber and cherry tomatoes; 2 tablespoons Lemony Dill Dressing or low-sugar prepared dressing of choice
  • PM Snack: 1 hardboiled egg with bell pepper strips
  • Dinner: London broil with fresh mushrooms cooked in beef stock with herbs of choice; roasted asparagus with minced shallots; Cannellini Bean Mash
  • Dessert: Chocolate mousse

Phase 3

  • Breakfast: ½ grapefruit; 2 scrambled eggs with cheese and salsa; 1 slice whole grain toast; coffee with 1% or fat-free milk and sugar substitute
  • Lunch: Roast beef wrap; 1 nectarine
  • Dinner: Grilled salmon with salsa; tossed salad with mixed greens, chopped cucumber and cherry tomatoes; 2 tablespoons Lemony Dill Dressing or low-sugar prepared dressing of choice
  • Dessert: Chocolate-dipped apricots
EXERCISE

The South Beach Diet Supercharged exercise program combines both high intensity and low intensity interval exercise focusing on a 10-week walking program. In addition, there are 27 strengthening and toning exercises that help you build muscle and develop a more defined look. The exercise section comes with photos and instructions.

The newly-devised exercises are intended to be done on most days of the week. They are a 20-minute daily investment on your part. Accompanying the book, the South Beach DVD, can also be purchased.

CONCLUSION

Maybe it's part genius marketing and part sound nutrition, but many people have had luck losing weight with the South Beach Diet. Its new supercharged version is updated with new meals, information and an exercise plan, a key component of any weight loss regimen that was missing in the previous South Beach Diet editions. Its emphasis on arming you with information on how to make longstanding behavioral changes when it comes to eating and exercise is the mark of any successful healthy lifestyle plan that keeps you fit for the long run.

I have just finished my Phase 1 yesterday, I lost weight and I love that I could eat as long as I felt hungry. My thoughts is that this diet teaches us to eat healthy.

Love this diet. Its the only diet that ever worked for me. A little difficult at first but if you stick with it, you WILL lose weight and it will stay off. After a the first 2 weeks, I didn't crave food the way I used to, just like the book said. I would recommend this diet to anyone. Its a very healthy way of life.

The food is absolutely disgusting. I would not recommend this at all. I went with this one because it was more affordable.

I have been on this diet for 10 days now and I've lost 10lbs. I'm curious though why I can't stay on phase 1 for another two weeks? I would love to loose a total of 20lbs before I start phase 2.

I have been doing SB for 1 week now. I have lost weight, have more energy and am really happy with it so far. My goal is to stick with this plan for good and not look at it as a temporary fix. I have about 40 pounds to lose. Wish me luck! :)

Don't do the Online South Beach Diet!! DId a 1 week "free" trial that ended on Sunday. But you can only call to cancel M-F. I tried to call when they opened on Monday and they charged me for 3 months! Terrible service and they are only there to take your money!!! talked with 3 people and they were all very rude and could care less that their business practices don't allow you to cancel if you joined on a weekend...

Over 7 years ago,I went on the South Beach Diet -I bought the book and followed the tipsin the text.I lost 56 pounds and went from size 16 to size 2-4.Only diet that ever worked for me-is the best..I have been a size 6-8 most of my life, but put on extra pounds after children.I have kept the weight off till this fall.Cruises, vacations, baking, and stress have all helped for the pounds to creep up-now with 10 pounds plus,I had to buy 6-8 sizes again. So,my goal is to begin phase 1 again and get back to normal.I have been a 'walking advertisement"for the South Beach Diet"during the past 8 years. Many of my friends and even clerks in clothing stores have followed the South Beach as a result of my recommendations.Comments like "that dress fits perfectly, you are so lucky to have your figure'prompted me always to start my speech on the South Beach Diet".I could write a thesis on this outstanding diet and why it is the only effective, nutritious, safe diet to lose weight..Coming from a family of physicians,I must note that the author,a physician, prescribed this excellent diet for his heart patients, Wow!It is the best!

My psychiatrist suggested SB so boost my sluggish mood and metabolism about a year ago which really motivated me to try it. I tend to shy away from diets because in the past after losing weight I always gain it right back. But when she suggested I try for something other than just weight loss it really inspired me. I noticed a changed within the first week. I did lose weight but more than that I had more energy and my mood was more stable. I didn't have the ups and downs from sugar crashes or the irritability from not eating at all.

It was Amazing, I am starting the SB diet again. In 3 weeks I lost 25 lbs, I cut out the pop, coffee with sugar, choclate, chips and honeslty I felt amazing. I didnt quite smoking though, but I walked everyday for about 30 minutes, sometimes if I going out for a smoke I would talk 2-3 times a day for about 30 minutes and the weight just fell off me. I couldnt believe it. At first you are a little hungry, but I try to keep myself busy so that I dont notice it. Drink the water when you think you are hungry if you have already eaten everything you are suppose to. If I could stay on Phase 1 for life I would. I love my carbs, not the yeast in the carbs make me blow up and pack the weight on.

I have been following SB for a few years now. On Phase 2 and weight gradually coming off.
I feel it is the best weight loss plan and banishes cravings which I had.
