Low-Fat Diet

BACKGROUND

One of the trusted trends in dieting for years has been the low-fat diet. Proponents standby claims that a reduction in saturated fat in one's diet provides a number of positive results including healthier heart, better cholesterol and blood pressure and reduced risk of many obesity-related illnesses.

FOOD and RECIPES

Low-fat dieters learn that there is a difference between healthy and unhealthy fats. Animal fats, found in dairy and red meat, are all contributors to poor heart health, body fat and high cholesterol. The fats found in plant products are monounsaturated fats and these can be consumed without hesitation and come packed with properties that reduce risk to certain diseases. That means when following a low-fat diet you can have all the nuts, avocados and olive oil you like.

There are also fats that are essential to your diet. These are Omega-3 and -6. Fish , leafy greens and soybeans are prime sources for these.

With a low-fat diet, you'll obviously strictly limit the amount of unhealthy fat you're eating and replace those with plenty of fresh produce, whole grains and lean proteins. Be sure to watch serving sizes because even in dieting there can be too much of a good thing.

There are simple ways to transform to a low-fat lifestyle. Remove fat from skinless poultry and other meats, use mustard in place of mayo on a sandwich, when you crave something crunchy grab carrots or apples instead of potato chips, top salads with home-made oil and vinegar, switch to skim milk and low-fat cheese, avoid fried food completely and instead grill or bake.

Be cautious of items advertising themselves as low-fat. To retain flavor and quality, many replace the fat with other calorie-increasing additives like sugar. These items really counter your dedicated efforts to losing weight.

EXERCISE

Since this isn’t a specific diet, you’re on your own.

EXPENSE

Your choice of many different books, such as The Jack Sprat Low-Fat Diet.

PRO

- Will help you prevent heart disease.

CON

- Often, low-fat diets are highly restricted in calories.

CONCLUSION

Low-fat dieting is the original thought process behind modern weight loss solutions. You need to be extra cautious when shopping for low-fat products because of some of the tricky ways companies market otherwise unhealthy items that way. Otherwise, the approach promotes good health and weight loss.
