Glenny's Glenny's

BACKGROUND

Glenny's is a line of good-for-you snacks that are also delicious. Endorsed by Rachael Ray, of Food Network “30-minute meal” fame, proprietor Glenn got his start in New York making brown rice crisps in 1979. Pan forward 28 years later, and Glenny's now boasts a full line of healthy treats, including brownies and potato crisps.

Glenny's is still based in New York, which until recently had limited their distribution to the West Coast. However, the company has a great website that makes it easy to order from, as well as fun cartoons to keep you laughing while you lose weight.

Glenny's is not just for the dieter however, as moms and dads alike have discovered that these snacks are so good, even the kids will eat them! This translates to a win-win, as both the parent and the child can grab a quick snack together, while they both enjoy the health benefit of a low-calorie, soy-protein snack that is quick and tasty.

PRO

- All-natural ingredients

- No trans-fats

- Kosher and Vegan friendly

- Available in Walgreens, Vitamin Shoppe and online

- Glenny's products feature non-GMO soy, which is an important feature for today’s environmentally conscious consumer

- Most snacks are pre-packaged at 100 calories, making it easy for “point counters” to count each snack choice at 1 point

- By appealing to the dieter who enjoys snacking between meals, Glenny's snacks support the myriad of weight loss programs built on the 6 mini-meal format

CON

- Glenny's line of snacks and chips are not readily available in major markets, though the company does a good job of providing online ordering support

- For those “unconscious eaters” who eat out of boredom or because they are triggered visually, these snacks are a good alternative to have in place of the usual junk food

FOOD and INGREDIENTS

It is difficult trying to find in-depth information on ingredients, however, Glenny's snacks promote that they are all-natural while promoting overall health.

Categories include:

- Low-fat Soy Crisps

- 100 calorie Brownies and Blondies

- Healthy Snack Bars

- Spud Delights (resembling Pringles)

- Light and Crispy Bars

- Marshmallow Treats (think Rice Krispie treats)

- American Fries (baked, rather than fried like French Fries)

The company has also managed to eliminate trans-fats from its foods, and a number of the snacks are gluten-free, vegan, and/or certified Kosher.

EXERCISE

Glenny's offers free MP3 downloads for your iPod to support a healthy walking program. In addition, the portability of these snacks make them ideal for active individuals.

EXPENSE

Each snack varies, but most fall into the $1.50 per snack range. Discounts are available online, and sale pricing by individual retailer can be found. Look for Glenny's in your local Walgreens or Vitamin Shoppe.

CONCLUSION

For many people trying to lose weight, having the opportunity to snack throughout the day is an important and effective weight loss strategy. It is not uncommon for a dieter to feel “deprived” when limited to a stringent 3-meal per day program, and as such, it is common sense that when an adult feels “deprived”, rebellious attitudes will ensue. The emotional eater who needs something crunchy, or the social eater who looks forward to snack time with family, will benefit from having a healthy snack choice. In addition, Glenny's snacks could provide some much needed variety to those following other meal based programs like Jenny Craig, NutriSystem or Weight Watchers, where snacks are an integral part of a dieters success.
