Amanda Shepherd’s 60 lb Weight Loss was Spurred by Knee Surgery

Today’s true weight loss story comes to us from Las Vegas, Nevada where Amanda Shepherd is enjoying the freedom of being 60 pounds thinner and has her eye on a future Tough Mudder competition. The look on her face in the before and after pictures says it all, she’s a pretty happy girl. We asked Amanda to tell us about her journey.

Tell me when your weight struggles began. I’ve always been the bigger kid in school. I was made fun of, but I always chose to surround myself with friends who didn’t care that I couldn’t fit in to double zero jeans. I never noticed that I was the bigger kid. I was a cheerleader, even though I was the biggest one.

It was in college that I stopped being as active, and started eating (and drinking) a lot more than I should have. That’s when the weight started coming on strong.

What habits specifically led you to gain weight? I ate whatever tasted good, and I ate a lot of it. I drank on the weekends because it was the cool thing to do. I wasn’t active at all. Exercise was not in my daily routine. I took the “freshman 15” seriously.

What caused you to realize you needed to change? The day I stepped on the scale, realized I hit 240lbs, looked in the mirror and cried. I just had knee surgery and it was hard to hold my weight. I could hardly walk up the stairs without breathing heavily. I knew that if I wanted my life to go somewhat back to normal after surgery, I had to start losing weight, immediately.

Eli Sapharti Lost 105 pounds – From “Big Guy” to Bodybuilder

Eli Sapharti is no stranger to the taunts that come from cruel children and ignorant adults. Over the years he’s been saddled with nicknames like, “Fat Boy” “Bubble Butt” “Bench Warmer” and more. Now, 105 pounds thinner, Eli boasts a body fat percentage of only 10% and he’s currently training to compete in the Physique Division of a Men’s Bodybuilding Competition in February 2024. We’re guessing he’s earned a few new nicknames that put a smile on his face.

Growing up, Eli remembers always being the kid who got picked last for sports teams, the one who endured teasing, bullying and being stuck in the dreaded friend zone when it came to girls. After a growth spurt in the 9th grade, his body lengthened and lost weight, but the pounds didn’t stay away for long. “I simply enjoyed food,” he explained. “As most over -eaters, I used food as my drug of choice.  Horrible eating habits and zero physical activity led me to gain an incredible amount of weight.”

Eli knew he was unhealthy, he was aware his weight had crept up to a dangerous level but that awareness wasn’t enough to spur him into action. “It wasn’t like I didn’t know that I was very overweight and needed to lose weight,” he said. “I mean, I was suffering from high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, severe anxiety and panic disorder. That should have been enough to get me to do something about it, but it didn’t.”

Mari Farthing Lost 61 Pounds While Battling Metabolic Syndrome

Mari Farthing before afterImagine being told by your doctor that you have a medical disorder that is affecting your health and makes it difficult to lose weight, yet that is the very suggestion he/she gives you to improve your condition. Most of us would feel frustrated, angry and overwhelmed. When Mari Farthing was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance), she felt the same way. Then, she cranked up her iPod, laced up her kicks and hit the track.

She knew losing weight would be tough but not impossible, and now she’s 61 pounds lighter because of her determination.

Mari describes her weight as being a, “lifelong kind of thing” that didn’t really become a problem until adulthood. She started to notice a few more pounds each year, even though she was taking steps to eat healthy and exercise. Before her diagnosis, frustration led to a cycle of yo-yo dieting. After the diagnosis, she felt relief; at least now she could quit feeling like a failure.

“When I learned there was a part of me that was essentially broken, it was powerful, she said. “It answered so many questions for me. It gave me strength. It empowered me. Let me know that I’m enough. Because I didn’t feel like I was.”

Kevin Griffin Lost 110 Pounds in One year When He Immersed Himself in Japanese Culture

Not long ago, Kevin Griffin worked in Wichita, Kansas. In fact, his office wasn’t far from Diets In Review. We knew Kevin was a great guy, but we didn’t realize what an internal struggle he was having with his weight. When he decided to take a job in Tokyo, Japan, we said goodbye and wished him well. When we learned what a positive impact the Japanese culture was having on him, including a 110 pound weight loss in just one year, and a total loss of 160 pounds, we knew he needed to be our next True Weight Loss Story. Recently we spoke to Kevin about his 6,000 mile journey.

Kevin Griffin Before and After

Looking back, Kevin said he realizes his weight gain in college was directly related to a sedentary lifestyle, late night eating and soda addiction. “It seems impossible now, but when I think back, I must have been drinking 30–40 ounces of soda a day,” he explained. “Cheap summer drinks and open soda fountains made it something I didn’t even think twice about.” He knew he needed to lose weight but the initial thought was too intimidating, that is until a friend started to shed pounds. ” My friend was very much like me, and seeing his results really made me believe it was possible. . . I knew I had to do it, and my friend showed me it really could happen,” Kevin said. By counting calories, he noticed an encouraging 40 pound reduction, then, he received a job offer that would take him out of the United States and out of his comfort zone.

Krista Raske Lost 136 Pounds By Creating Mini Goals Along the Way

Krista Raske didn’t set out to lose over 100 pounds. She didn’t know she was going to complete a 100-mile swim challenge at her local gym and she certainly couldn’t have predicted that she would be setting her sights on a 5k race. Initially, Krista simply wanted to join her friends for physical activities and buy clothes that were suited to her. By creating “mini goals” along the way, she was able to lose weight while gaining confidence and new outlook.

K Raske Before and After weight loss

Krista talks about the program that helped her on the road to weight loss and how she stays motivated:

Tell me when your weight struggles began. I have always been overweight. I was always the biggest girl in my class and was teased relentlessly. Dieting is something I’ve known since the fourth grade and I have tried every program, diet, club, etc. under the sun.

Allison Willson Lost 62 Pounds: “Big is Not What I’m Destined To Be.”

Writing the True Weight Loss segment every week gives me the opportunity to share inspiring stories with our DIR readers. Whether it’s the journey of a personal trainer who had to take his own advice, a spunky senior who didn’t let age deter his weight loss goals or a work-at-home medical transcription supervisor who battled a bone tumor, I want people who are struggling with their weight to find someone they can identify with. This week, Allison shares her 62-pound true weight loss story.

Allison Wilson Resize

Allison Willson can tell you exactly when her weight struggles began, right down to her age. ” My struggle began at the age of 6 when I had my tonsils taken out,” she explained. “I was a thin kid, then I had my tonsils out and didn’t eat for two weeks. My mom said I lost 30 pounds. Once I began to eat again, my mom wanted to feed me the foods I wanted so I ate a lot of cheese, pastas and processed foods. This is all I knew, this lifestyle of eating unhealthy.”

Growing up, Allison admits her weight gain continued due to poor eating habits including processed foods, soda, fast food and lack of exercise. In school, she endured name-calling like, “Moo-Cow.” Although family members, including her mother, told her she needed to lose weight, they didn’t necessarily encourage or provide her with the tools she needed to do so, successfully. In her mind, she thought she was simply destined to be overweight saying, “Being big, that’s who I thought I was, just a big girl.” (more…)

Marielle Doughty Lost 113 Pounds and Continues To Embrace the Journey

Marielle Doughty is one of the most positive women I’ve ever interviewed for our True Weight Loss segment. Time and time again she mentioned that although losing 113 pounds hasn’t been easy, she never considered it a struggle. Through the process she’s met new friends, learned how to cook in a different way, and found physical activities she truly enjoys participating in. Through her weight loss journey, she discovered it’s easier to embrace healthy lifestyle changes than consider them a burden.

Marielle Doughty before after

We asked Marielle to share her story with us:

Tell us when your weight struggles began. It all began when I got married and learned how to cook. I found out that love to cook and I love food!

What habits specifically led you to gain weight? My love of cooking and my addiction to sugar. I also became a stay at home mom and didn’t stay active at all.

What caused you to realize you needed to change? Every year I would usher at my kids’ dance recital and come home every night with sore feet. One year two thoughts came to me almost simultaneously: 1- It feels like we were just here last week, not a whole year ago. 2- If I had made small lifestyle changes a year ago, my feet wouldn’t hurt as much. It was a light bulb moment for me. I started my journey the day after the last dance show and a year later I ushered again, 97 pounds lighter, and I didn’t get sore feet.

How did you lose weight? I used the Zumba diet to start. I chose it because it doesn’t cut out food groups, it teaches portion control and healthy habits instead of being a diet that has a finish line. I wanted to learn how to eat healthy, not get to a specific goal weight. The recipes were yummy too. I still love to cook – I just know how to make better choices.

Kwin Peterson Lost 52 Pounds and Started a Bike To Work Campaign

Kwin Peterson is an avid cyclist from Salt Lake City who has ridden over 23,000 miles in the last seven years, most of those logged from his home to the office. Kwin started pedaling to work as a way to lose weight, unfortunately, the calories he was burning on his ride were being offset by poor eating habits. Finally, Kwin pinpointed a key downfall in his weight loss plan that was right in front of him every day. “The fact that I was only losing about a pound a month was a personal scandal,” he said. “It didn’t take much to realize that the free cookies constantly available at my office were a prime culprit.”

Kwin Peterson BeforeAfter

Realizing he needed to balance an exercise strategy with a new diet, Kwin made a plan and set a weight loss goal, “On January 1, 2024, I resolved to drop at least 31 pounds by July 24,” he explained. “Once the decision to give up cookies and stop eating after 7 p.m. was made, the results came rather painlessly. I kept a rough count of my calorie intake each day and tried to hit between 2400 and 2800 calories a day.”

We asked Kwin to share more details about his weight loss journey.

Lisa Niver Rajna Lost 58 Pounds While Traveling the Globe

Lisa Niver Rajna is a member of the prestigious Traveler’s Century Club, a unique group limited to travelers who have visited 100 or more countries. She enjoys trekking to new locales so much, she even co-authors a popular blog with her husband, We Said Go Travel. Over the last few years, Lisa has been hiking, biking, boating and walking across Asia but there was a time when she could barely walk a mile without feeling exhausted.

She has so many stories she could write a memoir, and she did, but the adventure that gave Lisa the most satisfaction was her weight loss journey. Though it spans years and thousands of miles, it’s one of her favorite tales to share.

lisa rajna crop

In 2001, Lisa was single, fit and working on a cruise ship. Then, the tragic events of September 11th enfolded. Subsequently, her company went bankrupt, she stopped traveling, moved in with her parents and turned to food for comfort. Her weight crept up so slowly, she actually argued with her doctor who told her, “I don’t care if your clothes still fit. You gained more weight.”

After an honest self-assessment, she finally saw what the doctor was trying to tell her. Initially she started walking, and made it her mission to keep going until the weight came off. At the time, Lisa was a science teacher. “For three years, I walked to work. It was two miles each way,” she said. “There were several other teachers (who were younger and lived closer) who all drove every day. When it was rainy, cold or dark, it was hard to keep going but I chose to walk.”

She was making great strides in her weight loss when she met a man named George. Their whirlwind romance led her to join him on a year-long sabbatical in Asia. Shortly after their arrival she exclaimed, “I’ve lost 12 pounds, I’m skinny now.” When George replied that he hadn’t noticed, Lisa was angry but then realized that although the comment seemed brusque, he was right, she still had a long way to go before she felt fit and healthy again.

Determined to change her body and make it stronger, Lisa intensified her walking, hiking and also started keeping a food journal. When she returned to the United States 11 months later, friends and family didn’t recognize her. Her weight loss even caused some confusion with an immigration officer who thought she might be carrying the wrong passport. In one year, she had the adventure of a lifetime, lost almost 60 pounds and even got engaged – under water.

Lisa and George recently published a memoir about the year that changed both of their lives forever, Traveling In Sin.

After already achieving one of Lisa’s wacky weight loss goals, fitting into the pants of her, “tiny mother,” Lisa says she plans on maintaining her weight by walking, eating smaller portions, and hula-hooping. She swears the beloved childhood activity is great for exercise. She even bought one she can travel with.

What advice would Lisa give to someone struggling with weight loss? “Don’t give up! Dreams can come true. I lost the weight, I found my true love, and I spent months traveling in Asia. If you had asked me if I thought I could lose the first five pounds, I would have said, I will try but I am not sure. I lost more than fifty pounds after turning thirty-nine and have kept it off for over four years. I know you can do it!”
