April has hit us and what better time to focus on losing the dreaded Muffin top? Who doesn’t want to get ready to strut your stuff on the beach with confidence?
Here are a couple of my all time favorite exercises that target the obliques by working them against the resistance of your own body weight. Perform these exercises at least 3-4 times a week for best results, but remember you need to combine them with some cardio such as walking, jogging, swimming or cycling to help lose overall body fat.
Muffin Blaster – Side Planks
Start with your elbow bent on the floor with your shoulder and wrist inline with elbow. Your top leg is crossed in front with your hips facing forwards and the arm is extended resting on the hip.
Inhale as you drop the hips toward the floor then exhale and lift the hips back to the start position.
Reps: 1 x 15 reps on each side
Waist Shrinker – Side Twists
Start with your elbow bent on the floor with your shoulder and wrist inline with elbow. Your top leg is crossed in front with your hips facing forwards. The arm is extended overhead in line with the shoulder and the palm is facing forwards.
Exhale as you draw the abs in towards the spine, and reach the arm underneath your supporting arm as you rotate the torso and lift your hips towards the ceiling. Inhale and rotate the body and arm back to start position.
Tips: Rotate your body and lift your hips as high as you can and look under your arm.
Reps: 1 x 10 reps on each side.

First lady Michelle Obama has been a busy woman this week. She’s been making the talk show rounds as she promotes Let’s Move, a campaign is designed to end childhood obesity by teaching children about fitness and healthy eating.
Mallett and Mrs. Obama invite 40 children to the stage to demonstrate exercises to keep them moving and excited about good health. Mallett led the children of Whitney Elementary through a fun workout the kids loved. In an email from Mallett, she described the episode as “an amazing experience.” See it now, and try it with your own kids!
You never know what you’re going to get when you come face to face (or at least Skype to Skype) with one of the A-listers of the fitness world. They can be divas, they can be aloof, and they can even come across like one of your best friends. This is what I found in my interview with Tracey Mallett, founder of the Booty Barre that has spawned a fitness craze. It’s in relaying her job title to our viewers that set us off on the giggles. I introduced her as the founder of Booty Barre, she responded that she is often called The Booty Queen.
Spoiler Alert: We say “booty” in this interview a lot. And we laugh about it. A lot.
New year’s resolutions are mostly synonymous with weight loss. It’s not a bad goal to set when you remember that about half of our country is considered obese.
We spoke with some of the diet and fitness world’s A-list to hear what their resolutions are for the coming year. While they are the pictures of health, many of them are also looking at introducing new habits to their lifestyles in the coming year. Many also model using resolutions to simply better themselves, be it a few less f-bombs or more time with family.

“My resolution is to stop swearing. While I’m doing that, I’d love to see people quit smoking, eat better, and hit the gym in 2012.”
