7 Best Running Apps

I  grew up as the daughter of a runner. I’ve been familiar with the sport since I was tiny. However, I never expected satellites and cell phones to become common tools of the trade. My dad had to make sure his wrist watch was fastened and his running shoes were laced before he left for a run. I have to make sure I’ve acquired a satellite signal before I can leave the driveway.

So, I guess it’s safe to say that times have changed. I think they’ve changed for the better though.

With the introduction of smart phones and phone applications, today’s runner can be much more informed. We can literally see our progress, be able to confidently and wisely go for our first run, learn to run faster, and receive coaching all from our little handheld device. There are a plethora of running and fitness applications available. These are just some of the favorites among users.

Of course the problem is deciding which technology to use. There are almost as many apps and online fitness tools as there are diets. You could spend hours exploring each and every one, trying to decide which one has the features you need. Or you could get so overwhelmed with choices that you don’t do anything at all.

Futuristic Fridge Could Assist Dieters

I admitted on twitter a few weeks ago that I had ordered a pizza for dinner after spending several days caring for a very ill doggie, making multiple trips per day to the vet’s office, rescheduling clients, and preparing for Christmas. After all that, I did not think my brain was up to creating dinner for myself and visiting relatives. We have all had those moments when we are mentally zapped. I knew that proper nutrition and full physical energy are important to mental recovery though, so I committed to drinking several glasses of water with my pizza and going to bed early. With the new fridge of the future however, pizza delivery may no longer be necessary when meal planning is more than you can manage.

We know fruits and veggies are good for us, but how many calories are really in a serving? The new Calorie Count iPhone app, created by CalorieCount.com, makes food journaling super easy. It even gives each food a grade, so you can feel good about eating that “A” salad.

Once you download the free app, set up an account that has your vital stats, such as age and weight. Then search for the food you eat and them select how much, and Calorie Count figures out how many calories you ate for you. Then just save that amount to your daily log. Searching for foods at first can be a little tedious, but after you find something once, you can save it to your “favorite foods” for quick future use.
