Once a year the nation’s “best body” gets displayed on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover. Last year model Irina Shayk graced the cover. Tonight, David Letterman will reveal the 2012 cover model on the CBS Late Show. Rumor has it that model Kate Upton will be this year’s sexy cover girl.

This Michigan native grew up in Florida and has had a beach body figure from a very young age. To help Upton maintain her cover girl body, she works with celebrity trainer Justin Gelband.

Gelband works with many models. To help Upton with her sleek curves he uses multi-directional exercises in her training. Gelband likes to keep things new and exciting by using a variety of exercises and equipment. Changing up the routine also helps tone more muscles. Upton works out with Pilates’ moves, boxing, medicine balls, and exercise bands. Gelband says, “The exercise bands allow the client to work on improving the elasticity of the muscle along with stretching and strengthening it.”

Sports illustarted Swinsuit 2011 CoverThe 2011 cover girl for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition has quite a healthy attitude towards eating and working out, perhaps a surprise to many. “I work out four or five times a week with my trainer,” says Shayk, “not because I want to be skinny, but because it just makes me feel good to start my day with a workout.” The Russian model says she feels comfortable at the gym, and enjoys physical activity. “I love to work out!”

Shayk enjoys traditional Russian dishes, which remind her of home. “My favorite meal is pelmeni,” she says. “It’s like dumplings with a meat. I miss all sorts of food from my home country. But every weekend I try to go the Russian supermarket and get something or cook it at home.”

For current cover model Bar Rafaeli, it was cake. Literally. The 21-year-old Israeli supermodel admits she ate whatever she wanted and didn’t do any special workout to prepare for the shoot.

“They tell you ‘you better not go on a diet before the shoot’. Girls tend to think, ‘Oh my God, I have to be in swimwear, I have to look amazing’. They just say, ‘You better not, girl!’ And they just let you eat all the time during the photo shoot. They love that; they love their girls healthy,” said Rafaeli.

When asked about her typical regimen, her answer was simple, “exercise and eat right.”
