Ricky Gervais is going to make that tuxedo look pretty good tonight. In 2010, inspired by his girlfriend, Gervais lost more than 20 pounds. He said at the time that it wasn’t about the weight, but instead, “It was more that I was a fat, lazy, out of shape slob, to be honest.”
Nothing could be further from a description of tonight’s Golden Globes host, a gig that requires as much energy as it does personality and thick skin. This will be the British actor’s third go at hosting the awards show, which can foreshadow the upcoming Oscars. He’s brutally honest, but with that brutally entertaining, which is what these often cut-and-paste awards shows can need to hold an audience’s attention. Last year, Gervais’ biggest joke might have been about the collapse of Charlie Sheen; this year, a bounty of Hollywood divorces in recent news could fuel his sharp tongue.
Gervais’ weight loss first made headlines in 2010, when we first reported on it. Fortunately, his focus on fitness hasn’t waned in the past year. At that time, he credited much of his weight loss to the sport of running, something he and his girlfriend Jane Fallon enjoy doing together in their Hampstead Heath, London neighborhood; or, when traveling, he’ll pound the pavement in NYC first thing in the morning.

There are just a few more hours before the red carpet is rolled out and Hollywood’s top stars strut down the walk of fame for this year’s Golden Globe awards. As the cameras roll and pictures are captured, the stars want to be looking their best. Check out what some of the top contenders do to stay “red carpet fit.”
Funny man Ricky Gervais will be hosting this year’s Golden Globes again. While his zingers are what gain him the most attention, he has been noticed for his weight loss this year too. Gervais has dropped about 20 pounds recently. He credits his girlfriend for the success. While attempting to lose weight herself, she began cooking healthier for them both. In addition, Gervais began running. So the tried and true combo of exercising more and eating less has made Gervais ready to look trim in his tux as he notoriously slams celebrities on Sunday night.
The nominees for best performance by an actor in a motion picture include many “A-List” actors including George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt. These screen veterans are no strangers to the lime light and they tend to make sure they are camera fit at all times.
George Clooney stays fit by following a balanced diet. He eats high protein foods, lots of fruit and vegetables, and keeps his fat and carb intake low. Clooney’s exercise routine includes aerobics and yoga. Clooney does 90 minute Bikram, or “hot yoga” sessions, even while filming. The hot yoga can speed up metabolism and burn fat faster.

Many male comedians slimmed down this year, including Drew Carey, Jason Alexander and John Goodman. The trend even spread to the U.K., where Ricky Gervais is looking trimmer. The comedian, actor and radio host credits his long-time girlfriend Jane Fallon with helping him lose 20 to 22 pounds. “It wasn’t so much about the weight. It was more that I was a fat, lazy, out of shape slob, to be honest,” Gervais told People magazine in October.
Gervias credits most of his weight loss to more exercise, having taken up running around their neighborhood in Hampstead Heath, London. “I stick to the paths,” he added. The couple runs about three or four miles.
Fallon has also lost weight, and between herself and Gervais they have lost about 40 pounds. “I was trying to lose weight as well,” she said. “So I was cooking healthier versions of what we were eating. He didn’t realize that I was probably feeding him less calories at the same time he was running.” Gervais says he didn’t change his diet dramatically, but he did stop eating snacks late at night.
