I strongly recommend getting your protein from a healthy source that is a part of your diet rather than taking a protein supplement. Obviously, we are always on the go and don’t have time to cook or grill chicken or round-up other healthy high-protein meats or dairy products. Calorie Counting, Social Support Key to Weight Loss

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine examined how different percentages of fat, protein and carbohydrate affect weight loss in individuals consuming the same numbers of calories. In the study, 811 overweight adults were randomly assigned to one of four diets: high fat and high protein, high fat and average protein, low fat and high protein, or low fat and average protein. Each diet totaled at least 1,200 calories and fell within the guidelines for cardiovascular health. The dieters were encouraged to exercise at least 90 minutes a day, in addition to being offered individual counseling every eight weeks and group counseling several times a month. (more…)

Protein drinks have become more and more popular over the years, and are most commonly recognized as used by gym-dwellers. But now, it is not uncommon for average exercisers to drink them. Even use by teens and pregnant women has been on the rise!

Our bodies need protein. It is responsible for building and repairing tissues (especially muscle), and works as many chemical messengers in the body, like enzymes. Not only that, but protein (along with fat) helps raise your satisfaction and fullness. These important functions give people the impression that the more protein they eat, the more beneficial it will be. But as with everything else, there is a limit!

Feedback to a similar article suggests that a vegetarian diet using legumes as a primary protein source just won’t cut the, ahh, mustard.  Some are looking for a bit more to gnaw on, and a lentil is not quite equipped for the job. Low-Carb, High-Carb: Both Diets Do the Trick

The key to successful weight loss is making it last. According to Australian researchers, both low-carb and high-carb diets work equally well for maintaining weight loss.bread and steak

The researchers also pointed out that some studies have suggested that high protein diets (low-carb) may be more effective in losing weight short-term than high carbohydrate diets. However, there is less evidence regarding which approach would be better for helping people to keep the weight off.

The study, led by Dr. Elizabeth A. Delbridge of the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital in Victoria Australia, divided 141 participants into groups of high protein and high carbohydrate diets for a year. The participants lost 36.4 pounds on average, and only regained about four pounds, over the following year. (more…)

Recommended Daily Protein Intake

“How much protein should I eat?” Have you found yourself asking this question? Well, the recommended daily value for protein is 50 grams. For those of us that exercise and push the body to the extreme, we need a few more grams per day. If you are exercising at a moderate to high intensity level, I recommend consuming 0.8 grams of protein for every pound of your body weight.almonds

For example: if you weigh 150 pounds, then you should be consuming 150 x 0.8, which is 120 grams of protein per day. Be careful and don’t over-do it though; protein is broken down into amino acids and excess amino acids are converted to fats and sugars and then stored in the body.
