How to Become a Yoga Instructor

Becoming a yoga instructor is one of the most burgeoning careers in the health and wellness industries. Unlike becoming a personal trainer, which is very regulated, becoming a yoga instructor doesn’t require the tests, certification and training that is mandated by the accredited personal training profession. There is both good and not-so-good in that.

First, because teaching yoga is a relatively new, albeit popular, profession, in essence, anyone who wants to become a yoga instructor can call herself a yoga teacher. This can easily lend way to unqualified teachers who take a few weekend yoga workshops and call themselves a teacher.

On the other hand, because of the lack of regulation, experienced yoga instructors who have been teaching yoga for years, maybe even decades, don’t need to go back and take hours of certification classes with a bunch of novices and learn information they already know.

It is this lack of regulation that has led to the Yoga Alliance, a national education and support organization for yoga in the United States that provides yoga certification for teachers. In September 1999, Yoga Alliance established a national Yoga Teachers’ Registry to recognize and promote teachers with training that meets their minimum standards. Teachers who meet these standards are eligible to register as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®s). (more…)

Former Biggest Loser Trainer Kim Lyons Announces New Online Diet

Kim LyonsKim Lyons, former Biggest Loser trainer and author of Your Body, Your Life announced a new online personal coaching program yesterday. The site is called Fast Track to Fat Loss, and will connect clients to real trainers. The trainers will work with clients to create personalized diets and workout plans using behind-the-scenes techniques from Kim’s time on The Biggest Loser. Trainers will also check in with clients daily to help them stay on track and answer any questions or concerns.

Kim is also publishing a new book, The Biggest Loser: The Biggest Loser Secrets. “It broke my heart to see my contestants go home and put weight back on after leaving The Biggest Loser Ranch. It is a huge flaw with the show. My goal was to create a program where people not only lost the weight, but they also kept it off for good. That’s exactly what we’ve done,” said Kim in a press release.

10 Things Your Personal Trainer Should Know

Are you currently in the process of looking for a personal trainer? Finding the RIGHT personal trainer is not an easy task and I strongly recommend not settling with one that doesn’t meet your standards. Below is a list of qualifications and things that your personal trainer should know. Good luck and train hard!

10 Things Your Personal Trainer Should Know:

  • Education: Your trainer needs to be well educated; either a nationally recognized personal training certification or health and fitness related degree (exercise science or kinesiology). Be sure to ask your trainer if he/she has these credentials.
  • Anatomy: Every great personal trainer should be able to name any muscle in the body and be able to tell you the function of that muscle.
  • Proper form and technique: Your trainer absolutely has to know the proper form and technique of every single lift or exercise. This is crucial for your over-all well-being and safety. If you feel your form is wrong, be sure to ask and maybe even get a second opinion (ask another trainer) just to be sure. (more…)

Cara Castronuova the New Biggest Loser Trainer? [VIDEO] [PHOTO]

CONFIRMED! Cara Castronuova is the new trainer!

NBC is staying pretty tight-lipped about who will be the two new trainers for season 11. They teased us during the season 10 live finale with silhouettes and blurry-faced preview videos training the contestants, but have offered no confirmations or any other identifiable information. Of course, everyone is curious who will be joining ranks with Jillian Michaels, leaving after this next season, and Bob Harper.

Cara Castronuova is the first real candidate we’ve been able to identify for the job of Biggest Loser trainer, with the rumor starting over at LisaJohnsonFitness.com. She says she received an anonymous call from someone connected with the show saying that Cara was the new trainer. She seems to match the vague description given on the finale. Cara is a two-time Golden Glove champion. We’re not sure what else her fitness background includes, but LJF says “I can’t find one single reference to a fitness certification anywhere. I also couldn’t find a reference to her being a personal trainer anywhere. I don’t know if she’s ever had clients in real life.”

She’s been working on an acting career the past few years, with six films under her belt, according to IMDB.com.

Whether Lisa’s source is right or not, one thing is true, there’s not a lot of information about Cara online, about her background, certifications, or what else her career has involved.
