Set to appear on the season premiere of Oprah, a two-day event starting September 14, as the “music interview of the decade,” Whitney will answer some of Oprah’s toughest questions on her life, including her drug abuse, divorce and the inspiration behind her long-awaited sixth album.

Healing from more than a decade-long history of drug abuse, Houston in years past has often been photographed looking frightfully thin, sallow and exhausted – just a few of the hallmark signs of her drug and alcohol addiction, which she did admitted to in 2002 in an interview with Diane Sawyer. She has denied having the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, and instead blamed her gaunt appearance on stress and the emotional turmoil of her substance abuse problems.

But with the help of her music producer Clive Davis, whom she has personally calls “her mentor,” Houston is back and ready to reclaim her title as one of the best leading female vocalists of all time.

DietsInReview.com will be tuning in to Oprah to learn how this Superstar managed to pick herself up emotionally and physically and come out looking better and healthier than ever.

It seems like the all-female talk-show The View is always in the limelight. But this time, it’s for a great and celebratory reason. Co-host, comedian/actress and diabetic Sherri Shepherd, who replaced Star Jones in 2007, flaunted her new fabulous figure last week on the show after losing 10 inches off of her total body and a whopping five inches from her waist alone!

She’s not revealing how many pounds she has dropped, but by looking at her newly svelte figure in a black bathing suit, she has obviously lost a significant amount of weight in just three months.

So what is her weight loss secret? Good, old-fashioned diet and exercise. Working out with fitness trainer Don Scott four times a week, whom she nicknamed “The Evil One,” and eating prepared meals from The Fresh Diet, a food-delivery service, Shepherd now wears a size 6 pant and a size 10 dress. She has even tried to get her pal Oprah to experience the steep-inclined treadmill runs and the bicep-burning plank moves she has to endure.

Prohibited foods on her diet were Shepherd’s favorite eats like cheeseburgers, onion rings and milkshakes. Even the famous fro-yo Pinkberry wasn’t allowed as Shepherd ate healthy for three months and was able to wean herself off of her diabetic medication.

But as a present to herself for donning a bathing suit and looking pretty amazing in it, she ate a celebratory meal of ribs, cornbread, collard greens and M&Ms.

How’s that for a sweet reward?

Forget low-carb, high-protein, or no-sugar diets. We are now embarking on a new era in weight loss. Rather than counting calories and carb grams, diets are changing courses and focusing on eating real foods that are natural, whole and above all, good for you.

Case in point: Laura Pensiero’s Real-Food Diet, which has been recently lauded in O magazine. Pensiero is the current owner of Gigi Trattoria in Rhinebeck, New York and a former culinary coordinator at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Wellness and Prevention Center.

Her Real-Food Diet focuses on just that: Eating real food that is fresh, seasonal and void of preservatives and additives. Local food, as Pensiero points out, is nutritionally and environmentally superior to the same items that we normally purchase in large grocery store chains. The bagged lettuce that you grabbed from the produce section of your grocery store was likely harvested thousands of miles away and transported across the country in order to end up in your grocery cart. From farm to fork, our food is looking less and less like anything but fresh. But food and health advocates like Pensiero want to change that.

While overhauling the entire way you shop and prepare your meals may sound like a mountainous task, this nutritionist-turned-chef-turned-green-market-champion has broken it down into six very simple steps that anyone can easily incorporate into their lifestyle. And she promises that by eating foods that are closer to nature and less packaged and processed, your diet will inevitably be more nutrient dense and you will inevitably feel, well, like a million bucks.

Penseiro offers up some tantalizing recipes in her cookbook, Hudson Valley Mediterranean, which as its names implies, is heavily influenced by the healthy cooking practices of the Mediterranean culture. The Gigi Barbina Salad is filled with fresh beets, butternut squash, walnuts, goat cheese, baby greens and olive oil, and her Rustic Fruit Tart is overflowing with summer berries, apples and farm-fresh eggs.

The Real-Food Diet is not a diet like the ones we are typically used to, but rather it’s a way of eating that connects you closer to nature and closer to your health.

Here is the complete review of the Real-Food Diet.

What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a natural compound found in the skin of grapes (therefore, also in red wine) that is claimed to drastically reduce aging related illnesses, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. The claim behind this is that you will live longer and live a healthier life. Dr. Oz discussed taking resveratrol in supplement form on Oprah raving about how he takes it and how pleased he is with it. This supplement is supposed to make you healthier while helping you lose weight and prolong your life. This supplement is supposedly able to counter the multiple negative effects of a high fat diet.

There are now many resveratrol supplements on the market that contain a very high concentration of resveratrol. In fact, to receive the amount of resveratrol in these supplements you would have to drink 1,000 bottles of wine a day, which obviously would not be recommended.

What does and doesn’t resveratrol do for health and weight loss?
The information I found on the product is that resveratrol “activates the body’s natural, genetic defenses against diseases.” Also, this supplement is supposed to be effective even if you have a poor diet, including consuming a high amount of fat. The product may not be able to improve your health directly, but it could “slow down” the path that your health is on. This is where huge red flags come up for me. So much research is out there displaying how a poor diet is linked to and associated with many diseases and cancer. I’m very skeptical that a supplement would be able to counteract a high fat diet. How can one lose weight while maintaining the same diet (calories consumed) and not adding any exercise? Any product that claims to do that is too good to be true.

Is the supplement better than just drinking wine?
As discussed above, in order for one to obtain the potency of this supplement they would have to drink 1,000 bottles of wine a day. Still in my eyes, eating the whole food is better than taking a supplement for it. I’m not certain if the drinking 1,000 bottles has any truth behind it, but I’m not ready to depend on a pill to improve my health. Relying on a healthy diet and exercise to improve your life to make you healthier has decades of evidence underneath its belt. Try to look past the hype of this supplement because it sounds (at the moment) just too good to be true. To the best of my knowledge there are no long-term studies of this supplement in humans and until there is we will have no proof of knowing whether or not this pill is truly valid and what affects it has on your body over the years.

Before I began taking this product I would research it more and speak to both your doctor and pharmacist.

You may know her as a former host of MTV, Jim Carrey’s girlfriend, staunch advocate for autism awareness, or a Weight Watcher’s spokesperson. Jenny McCarthy, a comedian, actress, author and activist who now regularly sits next to Oprah on the Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss current events, has launched her Give It Up Before Summer challenge which she chronicles on Oprah.com.

Jenny McCarthy giving up sugar. (via Oprah.com)

So exactly what is Jenny giving up? Sugar and eating past 7 p.m. And she’s blogging and twittering all about it. As a self-professed sugar addict, Jenny is nixing the sweet stuff just for 30 days and encouraging other readers to give up a vice of their own choice, be it chocolate, gossiping, or coffee and share with others how awesomely well or how devastatingly bad they are sticking to their Give It Up Before Summer challenge.

As an ardent advocate of the Gluten Free, Casein-Free Diet as a way to quell her son’s symptoms of autism, Jenny definitely knows a thing or two about nutrition. But when it comes to sugar, she is just as vulnerable as the rest of us.

Jenny’s blogs about detoxing from sugar are as colorful, comedic and unabashedly honest as her television candor. From providing us with details about how her PMS-induced acne has tempered since giving up sugar and how elated she was after finding fruit juice-sweetened cornflakes at Whole Foods to extolling the praises of agave nectar in green tea, it’s no wonder that both Jim and Oprah are smitten with this dynamo.

So why is it that Americans have such a sugar addiction? Sugar is surprisingly ubiquitous in not just the sweet and obvious sources like soda, juice, candy and sweetened cereals, but it is hidden in our packaged foods. Spaghetti sauce, salad dressing, beef jerky, lunch meats – it’s all over and worse yet, it’s often the second or third ingredient on the label meaning there is a lot of it!

It’s not so much that sugar is bad for you by its own but its the frequency of our consumption of the white stuff especially since half of the time, we don’t even know we’re eating it (sugar in my rigatoni marinara?). Sugar hasn’t been directly linked to obesity, diabetes or heart disease, but a diet high in sugary foods is associated with these weight-related conditions since foods that have lots of sugar are often loaded with calories, empty carbs and fat.

So if you’re like me upon reading about Jenny’s Give It Up Before Summer Challenge, giving up sugar for 30 days has peaked curiousty and offered inspiration. If I do decide to join Jenny and all of her sugar-free, caffeine-free, chocolate-free pals on Oprah.com, you’ll be the first to know.

Former Jenny Craig spokesperson Kirstie Alley shared with Oprah how she managed to gain back all of the weight she lost in 2006. Confessing to gaining 85 pounds, 10 more pounds than her pre-Jenny Craig weight, Kirstie candidly discussed how over the past year and a half, she stopped exercising and swapped her 1,400-calorie-a-day Jenny Craig meal plan for her favorite eats like chocolate and Chinese food.

Kirstie Alley in a bikini on Oprah in 2006. (Photo via The Oprah Winfrey Show)

The trouble started when Jenny Craig stopped monitoring Kirstie’s weight through their astutely-monitored weekly weigh-ins. Prior to this, Kirstie would rely on these weigh-ins to keep her accountable to her weight loss. Next, as Kirstie started to give herself some slack and loosen the reigns on her stringent eating and exercise routine, the portions got larger and the food became heavier. Soon after, she decided to turn her exercise room into a dining room and moved thousands of dollars of exercise equipment into her garage where they sat and collected dust.

After intense feelings of guilt, humility, self-loath and public ridicule, Kirstie is determined to once again get back to her bikini-wearing body. In the past five weeks, she has lost 20 pounds using her own weight loss strategy, which she is hard at work at developing into her own diet business. Harboring no hard feelings toward Jenny Craig, Kirstie will officially launch her new weight loss program in the next few months. By February, she has set a goal to “look ripped” with Michelle Obama’s arms and toned legs and butt.

Ironically, she brought new Jenny Craig spokesperson Valerie Bertinelli to the weight loss program who has since graced the cover of People magazine donned in a blue bikini and inspired millions of Americans to follow suit. But rather feeling jealous of Valerie’s amazing weight loss, Kirstie is motivated by her friend and is using her rock-solid body as inspiration to look just as great.

Although the actress remains fairly tight-lipped on what her new weight loss program is all about (we first mentioned Kirstie’s diet plan in February 2008), as soon as DietsInReview learns of its details, we’ll be sure to give you the skinny.
