Are Yo-Yo-ing Celebs More Relatable for Diet Ads?

Celebrities are real people. They go to the grocery store (unless their assistant goes for them), drive cars (if their driver has the day off), and their weight fluctuates.

Diet companies have a recent history of corralling celebrities into being their spokespeople, but is this the best marketing strategy? People who see a celebrity as a diet spokesperson believe that they “know” the person who is losing weight right in front of them. So what happens when this known person gains the weight back?

We all remember Kirstie Alley‘s shining moment on Oprah as she danced around in her bathing suit after her weight loss on Jenny Craig. Jenny Craig gave her the boot when she gained her weight back and she was back on Oprah, this time with conservative dress and a solemn look on her face.

Notorious yo-yo dieter Carnie Wilson was the spokesdieter for The Fresh Diet and had a successful start with a 20 pound weight-loss.

“She dropped, like, 20 pounds in the first three months. Then she, I mean, she had to go off of it. There’s no question. She might have eaten the meals, but she ate the meals with a lot of other stuff. She started a cheesecake company.” Zalmi Duchman, chief executive for Fresh Diets, said.

US News Ranks the Best Commercial Diets and the Best Diets for Weight Loss

US News Best Diets LogoU.S. News and World Report is famous (and in some cases infamous) for ranking products, institutions and services of all kinds, be it cars, colleges or diets. Yesterday, they released diet rankings in a number of categories, most notably the best commercial diets and the best diets for weight loss. They also created a list for both the best diabetic diets and the best heart-healthy diets, and a list of best overall diets.

U.S. News reports that they spent six month researching diets, and then had a panel of 22 health experts score the diet on seven different criteria. The diet was judged on its nutritional completeness, its safety, its ability to prevent or manage diabetes, its ability to prevent or manage heart disease, short-term weight loss, long-term weight loss and how easy it is to follow.

It’s little surprise to us that Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig topped both lists, as multiple studies have shown these two diets to be effective. Below are the top eight diets from the best commercial diets and the best diets for weight loss.

Jeanne Lee for CBS MoneyWatch takes a look at this question from a unique perspective: the cost to lose 20 pounds. She calculates the cost per pound lost for eighth different popular weight-loss systems. Most of these diets are meal delivery services that provide balanced, portion controlled foods. On the other hand, Weight Watchers and eDiets are support-only programs provide the customer with tips, goals and meal plans, but not food. Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem Make Changes for 2024

The diet industry is constantly evolving. That means even the big three in weight loss – Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and Nutrisystem – are all making various changes to their plans. Here is what you can expect in 2024:

Weight Watchers

One of Weight Watchers’ most famous and popular attributes is going by “PointsPlus.” Based on new nutritional science the nutritional values accounted for have been updated and encourage people to eat less processed foods with added sugars and fats and more natural foods that satisfy more and take more energy to digest.

Under PointsPlus, dieters get an allotment of points each day. Karen Miller-Kovach, the scientist who created Weight Watchers PointsPlus, compares the overhaul to what goes on in the car industry.

“The same car will get a tweak or two every model year. Then, once a decade, it gets a total re-design,” says Miller-Kovach. See the Weight Watchers PointsPlus 2024 Update. (more…)

Ad Spending Up for Weight-Loss Brands

Jenny Craig and Weight Wachers AdsThe three biggest brands in weight loss, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and Nurtisystem, are gearing up for diet season 2024 with new programs and ad campaigns. Although these companies struggled to recruit new customers during the economic downturn, they’re betting on winning customers back as financial conditions improve.

“A lot of people have traded down to junk food,” said market researcher John LaRosa, of Marketdata Enterprises. “The result of that is people are going to be heavier than ever before. And when they do come back to weight loss programs, they are going to end up staying longer than in past years.”

Nutrisystem is reaching out to the public with new ads that feature real users describing their successes with the popular meal-delivery service (see video below), a departure from their celebrity-driven advertising. “We let our consumers really tell our story,” says Chris Terrill, the company’s chief marketing officer. “It’s a bit different for us, and it’s in line with our research.”
