Group Wants Meridia Banned Due to Risk of Heart Deaths [UPDATE: Meridia Pulled from Market]

UPDATE 10/8/10: Abbott Laboratories voluntarily pulls Meridia from the market “because clinical trial studies showed there was an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in people who used the drug.”

The consumer advocacy group, Public Citizen, is urging the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to yank the weight loss drug Meridia from the pharmacies all across the country because of its potentially life-threatening risks.

So far, 84 people taking Meridia have died following heart-related complications. While Meridia comes with clear warnings that it should not be taken by those who have high blood pressure, take MAO-inhibitors or take any other stimulant diet pills, Public Citizen is strongly petitioning the FDA to pull the serotonin-norepinephrine-reuptake inhibitor drug before more individuals are harmed or die. Kimkins Diet Class Action Lawsuit Filed

UPDATE: October 29th, 2024, Judge Rick Brown found Kimkins Diet founder Heidi Diaz guilty of fraud and false advertising.

DietsInReview has spotlighted the plight of the Kimkins diet program and its customers over the last few years. A number of Kimkins customers have complained that the company has defrauded them, and made them very sick in the process.kimkins lawsuit

The company has steadfastly denied these claims, including a rebuttal published on this website by the former Kimkins PR director. Nonetheless, Kimkins has been investigated for fraud after many customers became seriously ill. And it’s no wonder why. The diet calls for a dangerously low-caloric intake – as low as 500 on a daily basis – and endorses the use of laxatives in place of fiber.

Side effects that have been reported by Kimkins followers include nausea, hair loss, fainting, heart palpitations, fatigue, bone and/or joint pain, and constipation. (more…)

California Bans Trans Fats

The “Govenator” is terminating trans fats!

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed legislation banning the use of trans fats in the state’s restaurants. The ban will be “phased in” in 2024. California will be the first state to ban unsaturated fats, which raise the risk of heart disease, while cities like New York and Philadelphia have passed similar legislation.
