What’s not to love about a portion controlled container of real fruit juice and, oddly enough, fruit bits. Seriously. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. I will admit I was skeptical – although I love fruit smoothies, I’m not so in love with regular fruit juice and I bought this – somewhat pricey at $3.50 for 2 bottles – with a healthy amount of skepticism. Juice mixed with chunks of fruit sounded a bit odd. I was in for a treat.

With varieties like Cherry-Grape and Strawberry-Orange, different taste buds are pacified. I chose my standard, default flavor of Mango-Peach and saved it for the end of an especially strenuous Muay Thai class. Served well-chilled, it had a pleasant flavor and the bits of fruit that I’d been skeptical of were refreshing. (Although, oddly enough, the fruits in the Mango-Peach juice that I’d sampled were not those named, but instead pineapple and pear.)

No matter. After I’d had about one-third of the juice, I added in a scoop of protein powder and was delighted by the yumminess that ensued. It was every bit as good as a Tropical Smoothie, my treat of choice after class – and much cheaper and I think healthier. It was also a smaller portion and something I could keep in my boxing bag.

Each 6.75 ounce bottle has 120 calories, 0 grams fat, 2 grams fiber, 40% RDA of Vitamin A and 60% RDA of Vitamin C. All-natural, low in calories and with two servings of fruit, this is a beverage that I’ll cheerfully buy again.

When we talk about diet, it’s almost always about solid foods. But don’t overlook what you drink. It’s a big mistake, as it impacts our weight a great deal. Here’s the report from CNN:

A new study from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has found that reducing liquid calories will help you lose weight and keep it off. This is especially true if you minimize or eliminate sugary drinks such as fruit juice and soda. I like to have the occasional glass of OJ like anyone else, but you’re better off eating your oranges than drinking them. Otherwise, you’re getting a lot of calories without the sensation of satisfying your hunger.

And if you don’t realize how much small changes can add up to big rewards, think about this: cutting out 150 calories every day could save you from gaining 15 pounds a year.

So, instead of a soda, try seltzer water with a splash of lemon or lime. It tastes almost like a light soda, with a little carbonated zing, for 0 calories.

The recommended serving size is eight fluid ounces, but I am going discuss what a 20 ounce serving can do. The human body is made up of almost all water and it is recommended that you drink at least 64 fluid ounces of water a day. I recommend drinking 80 to 90 ounces of water if you workout on a regular basis. Soda, tea, and coffee are a few examples of diuretics, which dehydrate the body.

Below is a breakdown of drink choices, calories in each, and how long it will take to burn. The following exercise information is based on a four mile per hour walking pace.

First, water is the best choice, but does not have any vitamins, minerals, or calories (which is a good thing). So, drinking water does not require any extra exercise.

Next, is diet soda, which is a diuretic, but has zero calories and requires no extra time on the treadmill either.

A sports drink contains 125 calories per 20 ounces and contains vitamins and minerals as well. It takes nearly 20 minutes to burn a 20 ounce serving.

Fruit juice (100%) contains plenty of sugar and 230 calories, which requires 34 minutes of exercise to burn.

Lastly, a regular soda is loaded with sugar and carbohydrates and contains 250 calories. Regular soda requires 38 minutes of exercise to burn off.

Most adults, hopefully, know that water is the best choice when deciding the healthiest drink to consume. Dieters and contentious eaters realize that other fluid options do nothing but provide you with extra calories, sugar, or sodium, none of which are needed in our society’s diet. Dieting parents won’t think of consuming anything but water because they don’t want those unnecessary calories found in beverages like juice, but will quickly serve their children a tall glass of some highly sweetened beverage. Why should it be any different for your kids? Treat your kids as you treat yourself, provide them with the healthiest options possible, not only does this provide them with nutritious options, but they are learning at an early age that things (in this case juice/beverages other than water) should be consumed in moderation.

Don’t get me wrong, 100% juice juices are a decent option (as long as you pay attention to serving size) and can contribute to your child’s daily fruit or veggie intake if they won’t eat the whole food source. A great idea for helping your child not take in those unnecessary calories is to “water-down” the juice, meaning pour half of the glass with juice and the other half with water. That way your kids will have a flavored beverage that provides some nutrition, but without all the extra calories.

Thinking of this juice blog I wanted to skim the grocery aisle and come up with a list of decent juices and some you want to avoid. Look below and see if your juice falls into one of my lists.

Juices OK to Drink
First off, always purchase 100% juice
-V8, Tomato juice, and prune juice are all 100% and provide you with fiber, protein, and potassium
- Juicy Juice is 100% juice
- Others that I found to be OK are Tropicana OJ, Simply Orange juice, Florida Natural
- Tropicana Pure juices give you potassium, but no fiber or protein

KEEP IN MIND!
- Always note sodium on juices…you will want to try to keep it as low as possible. Producers of the juices add more sodium when attempting to cut calories, so when you buy a “light/lite” juice note the sodium is higher then the full calorie beverage.

Juices to avoid:
- Anything not 100% juice
- Hawaiian Punch
- Kool-Aid
- V8 fusion light
- Sunny D
