Chipotle to Raise $1 Million for Food Revolution With Healthy Halloween Contest

UPDATE [11/2/10]: Scroll to the bottom of the post to see some of the scary processed foods that turned up at Chipotle on Halloween!

Maybe I am out of the loop, but I did not realize that Chipotle Mexican Grill serves only freshly prepared and unprocessed food. Not only that, but they are turning their annual “Boo-rito” Halloween event into a fundraiser for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution with a goal to raise $1,000,000!

In years past, those who came to a Chipotle Mexican Grill dressed as a burrito, taco, or taco salad would be treated with a free burrito. In honor of the Food Revolution, they are changing the deal just a little. The challenge this year is to dress as a “horrifying processed food product” and boo-ritos, bowls, salads, and tacos are just $2 to raise funds for the Food Revolution. There is also a costume contest with prizes up to $2,500! (more…)

Chicken Nuggets: Made From Pink Goo

Have you ever seen one of those dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets and wondered, how do they do that? I personally imagined some kind of cookie-cutter shaped blade on a big machine.

Wrong. Apparently, this is what chicken nuggets look like before they’re cooked. The chicken is mechanically separated and de-boned, then the remaining meat is ground-down into this unappetizing paste. According to Michael Kindt, the goop is then disinfected, re-flavored and bleached back to the whitish color we all associate with cooked chicken breast. And of course, shaped along the way.

Announcing: Season Two of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution

Fans of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution are looking forward to season 2 to start mid-season. Although ABC.com offers very little information, it has been reported that they have ordered another six episodes for season 2 of Food Revolution, which recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Show.

This season, Jamie will take on America’s second largest city, Los Angeles, California. The focus will include people of all ages in schools, offices, homes, and restaurants in L.A. Will the residents of Los Angeles respond differently to Jamie’s education about processed food and cooking lessons than the citizens of Huntington, West Virginia, who were offended by his ‘help’? L.A. certainly has a different reputation, but an obesity problem does exist in Los Angeles.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution from Fresh One and Ryan Seacrest Productions is loosely based on Jamie’s UK series, Jamie’s Ministry of Food and Jamie’s School Dinners, which helped reshape school food in Great Britain. Jamie is the author of several best-selling cookbooks, and his newest cookbook Jamie’s America: Easy Twists on Great American Classics and More! will be released by Hyperion in October. (more…)

Healthy Summer Cooking with Kids

During the school year your kids are working hard learning to read, write, multiply and divide. When school’s out, it’s time for fun and relaxation. There certainly is plenty of that to be had at the beach, the pool or amusement park. But sometimes the weather has a mind of it’s own.

On one of those extra hot and humid days, why not spend some time in the kitchen with your kids?

D.C. Schools Drop Flavored Milk From Menu

Yay, Jamie Oliver! Score one for the Food Revolution movement!

At a meeting held to discuss upcoming staff changes, Jeffrey Mills, director of food services for D.C. public schools, informed parents that the city’s schools would no longer serve flavored milk or sugary cereals. The menu change will begin at the start of school in August 2024.

Chocolate- and strawberry-flavored milk have long been offered in D.C.-area schools as part of the breakfast and lunch programs. Such flavored milks often contain as much sugar as soda, mostly in the form of high fructose corn syrup. HFCS has often been linked to the rising numbers in obesity rates.

Healthy Lunch Boxes for Kids

There has been a lot of news and momentum lately regarding cafeteria food for kids in schools. Jamie Oliver started a food revolution in Huntington, West Virginia; Rachael Ray started a food movement in New York City, but what about parents at home?

When I was growing up, my elementary and middle school didn’t have a cafeteria, so all kids relied on the food their parents sent them to school with. The staple seemed to be a sandwich along with a bag of chips and a can of soda, but there are much healthier lunches that kids could be eating that are easy to make.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Season 1 Finale

I was shocked to be notified that this was the season finale for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. It seems like the series just began. The message is too important to only give it six hours in the national spotlight.

As the episode begins, Jamie states that he has spent three months in Huntington, and he is throwing a Food Revolution Festival to conclude his visit. During the festival, you get to see that the Edwards family has together lost 100 pounds, a teacher reports that the kids are learning more easily and are no longer falling asleep during class.

Did Jamie Oliver Fail, or Did We?

Anytime someone attempts to make a change, other people will attempt to hinder those efforts through their own behavior or naysaying. Change is uncomfortable for some people, because the world surrounding them is altered, and it may also highlight their own need to change. Thus, it is not terribly surprising to me that the Internet is full of spoilers about Jamie’s “failure.”

School Cafeterias Get Healthy Makeover

One school teaches kids to grow and harvest their food.

I love watching Jamie Oliver in action working on the state of emergency we are in when it comes to the health of our children. Obesity rates continue to climb, but I feel a positive change is happening. It will take effort from all of us to make a difference. Jamie Oliver can only do so much on his own.

First lady Michelle Obama has been bringing national attention to the issue of healthy foods in our schools. More importantly, parents are getting involved and letting their schools know they want healthier foods in the school cafeterias.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Recap Season 1 Episode 4: Spaghetti vs. Fries

Jamie’s mission this week focused on obtaining funding from the community to be able to sustain the lunch programs and Jamie’s Kitchen after he leaves Huntington. Although successful, his fund-raising dinner didn’t raise as much as Jamie would have liked. His primary target was Doug Shields, communications directors at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Unfortunately, Mr. Shields seemed very concerned about how ABC would be marketing Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and how America would perceive their community.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Makes Kids Smarter

Fans of Jamie Oliver and his Food Revolution will not be at all surprised to hear about the results of recent research: kids benefit from good nutrition. But, in this case, in ways that may not be totally expected.

Michèle Belot, from Oxford University’s Nuffield College, and Jonathan James of the University of Essex, compared the educational scores and attendance in Greenwich to five nearby communities from 2002 through 2024, leaving out the school year when Jamie introduced new menus to the Greenwich schools.

The researchers chose communities similar to Greenwich in socioeconomic status for the comparison control group. What they found was that Jamie’s healthier school meals correlated with significantly improved test results and decreased absences as a result of illness. In fact, “authorized absences” decreased by 15 percent after the documentary, Jamie’s School Dinners, aired on Channel 4 in the UK.
