Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Clean” 3-Week Detox Diet

So when uber-star Gwyneth Paltrow discussed how her 3-week Clean detox diet created by Dr. Alejandro Junger, who has also authored a book by the same name, many of us put down our glasses of cayenne pepper, maple syrup and lemon water and listened.

A health devotee in addition to being a mother, wife, actress, and writer for her very own GOOP blog, Gwyneth used this 3-week detoxification to get rid of a few extra pounds and lighten up all around. After 21 days of sipping raw juices and gently noshing on watercress, miso soup and raspberry and rice milk smoothies, the Academy Award-winning actress professed to feeling “pure, happy and much lighter.” (more…)

Gywneth Paltrow and Bent On Learning Teach Kids Yoga

It is not just adults who are down-dogging these days, it is also kids. And kid’s yoga is proving to be a huge hit for these young yogis.

Bent on Learning is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance physical, emotional and cognitive abilities in New York City-based school children through yoga. With support from yoga devotee Gwyneth Paltrow and Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation, Bent on Learning is bringing yoga into select New York City public schools and also offering workshops to teachers to incorporate simple yoga techniques and mindfulness training into their teaching.

With the support of some of New York City’s most accomplished and passionate yoga instructors, Bent on Learning is holding weekly classes at select NYC schools. Each class teaches yoga postures, or asanas, breath work and meditation. The program is also aligned with New York state and national physical education standards. (more…)

This Thursday, Gwyneth’s diet and exercise secrets are shared with the audience, which includes losing the baby weight of two pregnancies, her macrobiotic diet, and her rigorous exercise regimen with celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson.

Celebrity chef Mario Batalli also makes an appearance to discuss the project he and Gwyneth have been working on together.

She credits trainer Tracy Anderson with helping her get on track and stay that way after having second child, Moses. They work out together as often as possible, but Tracy’s currently on tour with Gwyneth’s BFF Madonna. So does Gwyneth just wait until her trainer returns? No. She does exactly what we’d do, use Tracy’s DVDs. Unlike us though, Tracy sends her personalized videos from time to time to keep Gwyneth motivated and changing-up her workout. Gwyneth shared this recent video via her GOOP newsletter.

Gwyneth shares this note about the video: “She sent me this one for the New Year’s butt. It’s really hard. But do it like she says to do it and I swear that in ten days you will see your butt change shape. I do it with 1 lb. ankle weights and then I do her Dance Aerobics DVD. Some days I hate it, some days I love it, but above all, I stick with it. The sticktoitivness is what it is all about.”

Ashtanga Yoga a Favorite for Madonna and Gwyneth

Whether you’ve performed a few rounds of sun salutations or been twisted into Triangle pose, chances are you’ve done Ashtanga yoga. Ashtanga yoga is one of the oldest forms of yoga. Its series of postures has its origins in the Yoga Korunta, an ancient Indian manuscript. It is technically referred to as Ashtanga Vinyassa yoga, “vinyassa” referring to a dynamic system of breathing and movement.

History

The postures included in the six series of the Ashtanga yoga practice are presumed to be a few thousand years old. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that guru Sri Krishnamacharya and his student, Sri K. Patthabhi Jois took the postures outlined in the Yoga Korunta and devised a system of yoga that was initially taught to children and adolescents. (more…)

Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals Her Health Secrets to Oprah

On a recent episode of Oprah, actress, mother and now traveling gourmet, Gwyneth Paltrow chatted with Lady O about her postpartum depression, her newly transformed body, her family and her latest project with celebrity chef Mario Batali.

As one of Hollywood’s most beautiful and talented actresses, Paltrow seems like she has it all. And she does in many regards: A beautiful face, a gorgeous body, a lovely demeanor, an amazing career and a wonderful family. But after the birth of her second child Moses, two years ago, Paltrow had a stroke of postpartum depression that lasted for about 6 months. It wasn’t until she started to get out of it did she realize what kind of a hazy fog she had actually been in.

Now, she is sharing her beauty, body and health tips and secrets for women everywhere. Her recipe that helped lift her out of her depression included a combination of steady exercise, healthy eating and her hormones finally regulating back to their pre-pregnancy levels.

Healthy Eating

As a long devotee of Ashtanga yoga and a vegetarian, Paltrow takes her health, both physical and spiritual very seriously. But as many mothers can attest, with the complex and intricate combination of hormones, extra baby weight and sleeplessness nights, your once disciplined health routine gets lost in the juggle of family and work.

After years of following a strict macrobiotic diet, Paltrow has since loosened up on her eating rules. Although she still doesn’t eat anything with four legs, she admits to eat anything and everything from poached salmon to creamy French cheeses. But she firmly admits that in order to have the freedom to enjoy dessert after dinner, she must work for it.

She doesn’t count calories or carboyhdrate grams. Instead she exercises. Everyday. And for her, these well-crafted exercise routines are what works for her body so that she can travel around Spain with one of the world’s most celebrated chefs and feast on scrumptious paella.

Rigorous Exercise

Admitting to an Achilles Heel for fried dough, Paltrow, said that she couldn’t seem to drop those last 20 pounds of pregnancy weight after the birth of her son, Moses. Until she paired up with trainer Tracy Anderson, a five-foot powerhouse who whisked her own body back into shape after giving birth. Paltrow then introduced Anderson to her pal, Madonna and now both Paltrow and Madonna credit Anderson for whipping their bodies into red-carpet shape (not that Madonna needed that much help in that department).

According to Gywneth, Anderson’s routines kick your butt! She relies on cardio dance training and resistance training to give the body a lean and defined look. Anderson wants her female clients to have the body of a dancer…strong and long.

On any typical day,  Gwyneth works out with Tracy at her home gym, but when she’s traveling, she says she won’t leave home without Tracy’s exercise DVDs. They are one of Paltrow’s staple travel companions.

Tracy’s routines for both Madonna and Gwyneth include working out in a room that is heated to 80 degrees. The heat creates sweat which ups the body’s metabolism in an effort to cool itself down. This extra exertion from the body equates to more calories burned. In this heated room,  Paltrow spends two hours doing hundreds of squats, lifts and other exercises that give her heart rate and muscles a real burn. Tracy’s own signature band system of exercises targets specific muscles at a variety of angles. And she only has her gals doing resistance training with a 3 pound weights or less. Tracy does not believe that any woman should use more weight than this since she feels it puts the muscle at risk for bulking up.
