We always hear about how unhealthy restaurants are with their giant portion sizes and fat-laden meals, but what about shedding some positive light on restaurants? After all, many restaurants go to great lengths to ensure they’re serving delicious food that let you make healthy dining choices.

The Chick-Fil-A chargrilled chicken sandwich helps this restaurant earn an A- from Eat This, Not That.

David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding, of Men’s Health magazine and co-creators of the Eat This, Not That series, have researched the country’s healthiest restaurants and rated them on a number of different factors. They looked at the calories contained in an average restaurant entree, which is also an indicator of portion size as well as whether or not the restaurant served a fruit or veggie side dish, if they offered whole grains and whether they cooked with trans fats.

Here are their top picks for healthy restaurants:

1) Chick-Fil-A: This Atlanta-based fast-food chain gets top marks for serving calorie-controlled dishes, sides and kids eats. Score: A-

2) Subway: With many low-fat and low-cal options to choose from, as well as whole grain bread, fresh veggies, and healthy soups, Subway is a healthy dining-out hit. Score: A-

3) Jamba Juice: A cold and creamy way to get in your fruit (and veggies), but just make sure your smoothie only contains fresh ingredients and no added sugar. Score: A-

4) Au Bon Pain: With an in-store nutritional kiosk that helps you find a meal that fits your nutrition goals and with many healthy options to choose from, Au Bon Pain is a smart dining choice. Bonus, they can often be found in airports for hungry travelers! Score: A-

This McDonald's Grilled Chicken Salad can be a healthy choice - just be mindful of calorie fillers like cheese, dressing and croutons.

5) Boston Market: Skip the mac and cheese and creamed spinach and instead opt for Boston Market’s enormous array of healthy vegetable sides and lean meats. Score: B+

6) Cici’s Pizza Buffet: A thin crust pizza with plenty of low-fat and healthy pizza toppings makes Cici’s a smart choice for pizza lovers. Score: B+

7) McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Wendy’s: No. Your eyes are not deceiving you. These fast-food giants have made tremendous strides in bringing you healthy fresh fare like salads, yogurt, grilled chicken breast sandwiches and tacos.
What would we do without our healthy allies David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding, who brought us Eat This Not That!? They have done some homework for us on the WORST foods you can eat or even split with another person for 2009. And my friends, it doesn’t look pretty. Get out the smelling salts and sit down as you read on about how nutritionally-offensive some of your favorite restaurant and grocery store eats stack up:

(FYI: This list is in no particular order. It’s all bad news.)

1. Bob Evans’ banana pecan pancakes = 1,543 calories

2. Marie Callender’s Creamy Parmesan Chicken Pot Pie = 1,060 calories

3. Blimpie Veggie Supreme 12″ = 1,106 calories

4. Dairy Queen 6-Piece Chicken Strip Basket = 1,270 calories

5. T.G.I. Friday’s Pecan Crusted Chicken Salad = 1,360 calories

T.G.I. Friday's Pecan-crusted Chicken Salad is a diet disaster.

6. P.F. Chang’s Tam’s Noodles = 1,678 calories

7. Uno Chicago Grill Pizza Skins (full order) = 2,400 calories

8. Uno Chicago Grill Chicago Classic Deep Dish Pizza = 2,310 calories

9. Quizno’s Tuna Melt (large) = 2,090 calories

10. Romano’s Macaroni Grill Spaghetti and Meatballs with Meat Sauce = 2,430 calories

That is half of this eye-opening list. That’s probably enough to scare us for now.

So what can you do if you’ve spotted one of your favorite foods on this list? Make some substitutions, opt for no cheese on the tuna melt and/or don’t just split these entrees, but rather portion them out across four meals (part of horror of these numbers comes from the gargantuan portion sizes).

You can also experiment by making your own version of T.G.I. Friday’s Pecan Crusted Chicken Salad at home so that you can control all of the ingredients and cooking techniques.

Also, before you dine out, check out the restaurant’s websites for the nutritional stats of all of their meals. That way, you can decide what you are going to order beforehand and you can feel confident in knowing that your selection fits within your healthy eating goals.

Their book is not a diet, but rather it gives tons of practical and accurate information on how to navigate yourself through the grocery store and not end up with a cart full of Whole Grain Pop Tarts and diet soda while thinking that you’re eating healthy. These two authors and health experts give us food label reading 101 in addition to helping us choose the healthiest snacks, the tastiest and leanest pieces of meat, and the most nutrient-dense produce so that you (and your family) can stay healthy, lose weight and save money. In these tough economic times, that sounds pretty OK.

Even if you think that you know your way around the grocery store, you’ll learn heaps of new information such as secrets that the food industry doesn’t want you to know and the 20 worst foods sold at every grocery store around the country.

With New Years resolutions just a mere month away, you might want to think about pre-ordering Eat This, Not That Supermarket Survival Guide so that when the ball drops, you can hit the ground charging with your grocery cart in tow armed with the healthiest shopping-savvy info out there! The book releases Dec. 30, 2008.
