What’s not to love about a portion controlled container of real fruit juice and, oddly enough, fruit bits. Seriously. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. I will admit I was skeptical – although I love fruit smoothies, I’m not so in love with regular fruit juice and I bought this – somewhat pricey at $3.50 for 2 bottles – with a healthy amount of skepticism. Juice mixed with chunks of fruit sounded a bit odd. I was in for a treat.

With varieties like Cherry-Grape and Strawberry-Orange, different taste buds are pacified. I chose my standard, default flavor of Mango-Peach and saved it for the end of an especially strenuous Muay Thai class. Served well-chilled, it had a pleasant flavor and the bits of fruit that I’d been skeptical of were refreshing. (Although, oddly enough, the fruits in the Mango-Peach juice that I’d sampled were not those named, but instead pineapple and pear.)

No matter. After I’d had about one-third of the juice, I added in a scoop of protein powder and was delighted by the yumminess that ensued. It was every bit as good as a Tropical Smoothie, my treat of choice after class – and much cheaper and I think healthier. It was also a smaller portion and something I could keep in my boxing bag.

Each 6.75 ounce bottle has 120 calories, 0 grams fat, 2 grams fiber, 40% RDA of Vitamin A and 60% RDA of Vitamin C. All-natural, low in calories and with two servings of fruit, this is a beverage that I’ll cheerfully buy again.

And President Hugo Chavez is not likely to put the breaks on his heavy anti-capitalist rhetoric anytime soon. Some of his latest moves have been on the dietary front.

Chavez and his government are taking on Coca Cola and their Coke Zero product. Health Minister Jesus Mantilla has said that Coke Zero can no longer be sold in his country, and the inventory that is stocked must be removed from store shelves.

“The product should be withdrawn from circulation to preserve the health of Venezuelans,” says Mantilla. However, he hasn’t said what the grave health risks are that Coke Zero poses.

Earlier this year, the Venezuelan government seized a rice mill and pasta factory belonging to the U.S. company Cargill. Other threats of nationalization and government intervention have been made, including potential action against U.S. drug company Pfizer.

When we talk about diet, it’s almost always about solid foods. But don’t overlook what you drink. It’s a big mistake, as it impacts our weight a great deal. Here’s the report from CNN:

Embedded video from <a href=”http://www.cnn.com/video” mce_href=”http://www.cnn.com/video”>CNN Video</a>

A new study from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has found that reducing liquid calories will help you lose weight and keep it off. This is especially true if you minimize or eliminate sugary drinks such as fruit juice and soda. I like to have the occasional glass of OJ like anyone else, but you’re better off eating your oranges than drinking them. Otherwise, you’re getting a lot of calories without the sensation of satisfying your hunger.

And if you don’t realize how much small changes can add up to big rewards, think about this: cutting out 150 calories every day could save you from gaining 15 pounds a year.

So, instead of a soda, try seltzer water with a splash of lemon or lime. It tastes almost like a light soda, with a little carbonated zing, for 0 calories.
