Isn’t it a little bold to say you’re curing diabetes, was my first question for Biggest Loser’s Dr. Robert Huizenga, better known as Dr. H. He asserted that not only can it be done, but Biggest Loser is blazing the trail where curing diabetes is concerned. Yes, a reality show is doing more than his standard medical peers.
We spoke this morning in preparation for tonight’s episode in which the contestants will spend their last week on the ranch. As everyone says their farewells, they’ll meet with Dr. H one more time to find out, aside from their scale weight, how they’ve changed their bodies and their health. For Gina, she’s leaving the ranch without the type 2 diabetes she arrived with.
“If we can keep Gina at the levels she’s at tonight for the next 2-5 years, we’ll say we cured her diabetes,” said Dr. Huizenga.
How is that so? Right now, Gina’s diabetes has been reversed, or is in remission. As Dr. Huizenga explained, they’ve returned all the indicators to normal. To achieve cure, they have to stay that way for the next several years.
Gina’s not the only one turning back time on this disease. Young Lindsay, one of the teen ambassadors featured this season, is celebrating a complete reversal of her pre-diabetes. Doing so at such a young age is better and easier than trying to go back when she’s forty, explained the doctor.
“It’s like putting the toothpaste back in the tube,” he analogized. (more…)
A new test is being conducted on the Biggest Loser contestants, and everyone watching at home will get to benefit too, with the introduction of the Biggest Loser Know Your Number HealthScore. The test is being introduced on the January 12 episode of Biggest Loser, season nine episode two.
For the first time, contestants will learn their HealthScore number and their risk of the three most deadly diseases: stroke, diabetes and heart disease. With Dr. Huizenga, Medical Advisor on The Biggest Loser, the contestants will also learn how many years of life they can recover when they make the necessary habit changes to their health. Then, at mid-season, the contestants will be tested again to reveal drastic changes in their HealthScore, no doubt stunning them and viewers and proving the benefit of fitness, proper diet and lifestyle change.
“The Biggest Loser Know Your Number HealthScore opens a new dimension to the show because it provides a personalized health roadmap for contestants to know their current health risks and will let me track their progress toward reducing those risks through the season,” says Dr. Robert Huizenga. “I believe the HealthScore can provide the same guidance to anyone wanting to take charge of their health.”
Dr. Huizenga is one of the first people the Biggest Loser contestants meet. He gives them a thorough physical to assess how healthy, or in most cases unhealthy, they are. He makes the determination whether or not they can compete on the show. In cases like Biggest Loser 6’s Jerry, there are strict limitations on what they can and can’t do on the ranch. Many contestants, like season 5’s Bernie Salazar, credit Dr. Huizenga with helping them regain their health and lives. Here Bernie and Dr. Huizenga visit immediately following the Biggest Loser: Families finale.
