It seems everywhere you look there’s a new weight loss challenge. There’s nothing wrong with this at all- if anything, it’s been a long time coming. We’re fat America! But just like any problem- we’re aware and everyone is beginning to put into action plans that are helping all of us live healthier, look greater and feel better than ever before.
Thanks to some brilliant programs from Oprah and Bob Greene, Dr. Ian Smith from Celebrity Fit Club, Discovery Health and Biggest Loser, you’re certain to find one of these exciting campaigns to join. While you can read a full review of each of these on the Diets In Review site- I want to give you a brief glance at each and hopefully you’ll find one that you feel comfortable with. Nothing like a little encouragement and team effort to help you lose weight!
Oprah and Bob’s Best Life Challenge
They kicked off today, live on Oprah. They’re encouraging one million viewers to sign the Best Life contract and start making the changes necessary to live a healthier life, by following the Best Life plan. It’s NOT a diet- it’s a lifestyle makeover. The cost of the online membership is $5/week and/or the cost of the book. Bob says there are five things you can do right now that will get you started on the right track:
– Get Moving
– Stop eating two hours before you go to bed; or schedule a stop-eating time each day like Oprah does (7:30 p.m.)
– Eat three meals a day, including a healthy breakfast and one snack
– Stop drinking alcohol (you can re-introduce it later)
The 50 Million Pound Challenge
Dr. Ian Smith is encouraging the African-American community to join together and lose an astounding 50 millon pounds. The program is free, and open to anyone interested in joining. Part of your free membership you’ll receive diet and nutrition advice from experts and exercise instruction that encourages a workout at least five times each week. You can also participate with other members at free events in communities across the country and via message boards on the 50 Million Pound site.
Biggest Loser Million Pound Matchup
We talked about this one last week- but nothing beats a good reminder! Inspired by this season’s Biggest Loser Couples, the show is encouraging you to find a partner and with all members collectively lose a million pounds. The program is free and requires you have a Microsoft Spaces profiles where you can journal and video-blog your experience. The winning team will be announced at the show’s live finale this spring. While there’s no explicit guidance on this one, you can lean on the Biggest Loser Club program which is a smart, healthy weight loss approach inspired by the show; for this there is a $20/month fee.
Discovery Health National Challenge
This is the fifth year or the network’s weight loss challenge, and today, Jan. 15, is your last opportunity to sign up. Each January, just as everyone is forcibly speaking those new year’s resolutions, Discovery Health teams with Bally Fitness Centers for an eight-week free weight loss challenge. It’s simple, free and most of all promises successful results. Sign-up is free and there are weigh-ins at Discovery Stores, Bally centers and malls across the country. You even get a free eight-week membership to Bally’s (you can’t beat that!). You’ll be provided with expert advice from Dr. Mehmet Oz, learn how to eat more nutritiously, find a proper exercise program, and begin to live a healthier life.
In addition to providing us with worldly information from the comfort of our living room couches, The Discovery Channel is now helping you to get in shape for the New Year. Discovery’s National Body Challenge kicks off on January 5th and 6th with celebration events at four malls across the country (Alderwood Mall, Seattle, WA; Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, IL; Columbia Mall, Columbia, MD; and Short Hills Mall, Short Hills, NJ).
It is a free 8-week, fitness and weight loss challenge that will provide you with online and offline tools to shed some extra pounds, stay inspired and to create a you that is, in sum, healthier. By registering, you get a free 8-week membership to Bally’s Fitness, too. For most of us who are just beginning the cold doldrums of winter in our respective states, having a gym to go to exercise during these tough months is a bright beacon of healthy light this time of year.
The Discovery National Body Challenge may contain faint whispers of being the next “The Biggest Loser” but the program is far from the toughness, hard-nosed discipline and sometimes, humiliating features of the television’s intense reality show. With a medical team like Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Discovery Health Channel’s medical expert, Dr. John Whyte offering you expert advice, insight and sound information, the challenge sounds like a fun, safe and effective way to meet your 2008 nutrition and fitness goals. Good luck!!
