It’s National Women’s Health Week

National Women’s Health Week begins Monday, May 10, as recently proclaimed by President Obama. Created by the Department of Health Services, National Women’s Health Week empowers women to make their health a top priority.

With this year’s theme of “It’s Your Time,” the nationwide initiative encourages women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life. What are some of the actions you can take to help improve your own health, and your children’s and grandchildren’s health?

Food Choices Affect Your Grandchildren

We all know that eating a diet high in fat will have an adverse affect on our own health, causing weight problems, heart attacks, diabetes and a myriad of other issues. It’s even somewhat easy to see that your dietary choices can have a negative affect on the health of your children. Recent obesity research has backed this up.

But, can a mother’s diet during pregnancy even affect her grandkids? New research seems to point to this reality.  The research was presented last week at the American Association for Cancer Research’s annual meeting in Washington D.C.

Gling.com: A Gluten-Free Social Site

Last month I completed a gluten-free series covering a variety of products and resources for those who suffer from Celiac disease or are looking for more information on the topic. A new resource recently launched called Gling, a social website for members to share in all things gluten-free and we wanted to take a closer look.

Gling originally launched providing information on food, recipes and a directory of gluten-free shops and restaurants by location. Additionally, there was an article section which includes original content from Gling writers as well as from popular gluten-free bloggers.

More recently, Gling announced a partnership with the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research, which is the largest Celiac research center in the world. The research from this center has helped in making progress to diagnose, treat and improve the lives of people with Celiac, and should be a great resource for the Gling community.

I loved the concept of the site, so I signed myself up for a free membership and started checking out all the site had to offer. The main sections are recipes, food and locations. I review each below.

We Love Healthy Choice!

Lemon Garlic Chicken & Shrimp

Since I work at home, I can eat whatever I want. That can be a mixed blessing, because it makes it very easy to graze from the fridge all day long.

I sometimes have a tough time eating the right things, which is why I was so excited when I discovered Healthy Choice frozen meals. It makes the lunch prep a no-brainer – just pull something out of the freezer, microwave it, and have a delicious lunch in no time at all. I wondered, though, if the meals were actually healthy. Happily, I discovered that indeed they were.

Healthy Choice has created a line of foods that is the only brand in its category that can call 100 percent of its products “healthy” as approved by the FDA. Their literature states: This is not diet food. It’s great food made with healthy ingredients right from the start.

The Skinny on Muscle and Fat

Does muscle weigh more than fat? Well, there are two ways to look at this question.

Let’s take 10 pounds of fat versus 10 pounds of muscle. Ten pounds is 10 pounds, right? Yes. But, the 10 pounds of fat is much bulkier than the 10 pounds of muscle. Another way of looking at it is that a 10-pound pile of fat will take up more space than a 10-pound pile of muscle. So, more muscle would be needed to equal the space or volume of fat, thus making the pile of muscle weigh more.

That being said, let’s go into how muscle tissue and fat tissue are totally different. People often mistakenly think that doing crunches will turn the layer of fat into muscle. First off, there are three ways of losing weight (burning calories): diet, cardiovascular exercise, and weight training.

Getting Back on the Wagon after a Diet Mistake

embarrassedI fell off the wagon. It’s been one of those weeks. One of the weeks where everything hits all at once, when you can’t keep up, stress levels are high, you’re running on adrenaline, and I didn’t have any caffeine for a week. My mind is racing at full speed, but my body is tired. I have just been trying to keep up with e-mail and questions on social media, and hoping things slow down so I can get more work done.

It is probably a combination of comfort and necessity, making sure that I am able to eat in between appointments and rushing from one to the next across town, that instigated tonight’s stop at Arby’s. Before I had gotten halfway through my sandwich, I realized just how long it had been since I have eaten fast food. My body is not prepared for it any longer. I will likely feel ill as a result. Yes, even the experts that blog about health, run half marathons, and make weekly trips to the farmer’s market can fall of the wagon at times and be tested by the ease and comfort of fast food. Three Steps to Lowering Your Cholesterol

February is American Heart Month. It’s a time to bring awareness to heart disease and stroke, the number one killer in the United States, so you and people you love don’t become a statistic.

heart appleBe honest. Do you know your numbers? Your cholesterol numbers. You should have your cholesterol measured once a year after age 30, especially if you have a family history of high cholesterol or heart problems. High cholesterol can double the risk for heart disease. It’s entirely possible that your body will produce too much cholesterol, even if you take steps to lower it. However, many people are successful at lowering their cholesterol with some simple changes.

There are three ways you can make your cholesterol levels better. (more…)

Michelle Obama’s Obesity Comments about Sasha and Malia

Michelle Obama has had a tremendous impact on American families with her push for living healthy and goal of eliminating childhood obesity in her role as first lady. She announced recently that her new initiative aimed at targeting childhood obesity is under way, and adds that her feelings on the program crystallized when she was faced with a less than favorable report from her daughters’, Sasha and Malia, pediatrician.michelle obama children

“We went to our pediatrician all the time,” Obama said, via ABC News. “I thought my kids were perfect — they are and always will be — but [the doctor] warned that he was concerned that something was getting off balance.”

Mrs. Obama says that she was too close to really see the changes in her girls and when the doctor suggested that Mrs. Obama look at her daughters’ BMI numbers, she made small diet changes. Those small changes that she made in their daily habits helped to pull the numbers back into balance.

Instead of being applauded for her efforts, Mrs. Obama has been the subject of controversy for her use of the word “diet.” Reports have said that by using her daughters as an example, she may have harmed their self-esteem. Some critics have said that she should have focused more on lifestyle change, instead of weight loss. (more…)

Maintaining the Momentum of New Year’s Resolutions

successJust about a month ago, we were celebrating the beginning of a new year, and a new decade. Did you make a New Year’s Resolution? Did you decide that with the new year would come a new you? How to Lose 10 Pounds in 30 Days

Losing weight is a difficult process and a huge commitment. There are three main things that go into losing weight. The most important is your diet, followed by cardiovascular training and weight training.lose weight

A simple way to lose weight is to cut carbohydrates and fat out of your diet, but you need carbohydrates to give you energy throughout the day. So, eat carbohydrates only in the morning to provide your body with energy through the day.

Second, you definitely need a diet high in protein to build and repair the muscle fibers that will be broken down during cardiovascular and weight training. I recommend doing at least a 30-minute cardiovascular training prior to breakfast every morning. This will jump start your metabolism and keep it up and running all day. (more…)
