FDA Rejects Diet Pill Qnexa

Qnexa, what would have been the first new weight loss drug in a decade, was rejected in a narrow vote by the Food and Drug Administration. They reported concerns about the lack of data about the pill’s cardiovascular effects. The committee voted 10-6 against Qnexa, created by Vivus, Inc., which contains one of the active ingredients found in Fen-phen. Fen-phen was taken off the market because it was linked to heart damage.

Warning Alli Linked to Liver Damage

Warning to all consumers of Alli and Xenical: The FDA has linked the weight loss pills to severe liver damage in certain rare cases.

“The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it has added a warning about the risk to the label of the drug, which is sold over-the-counter by GlaxoSmithKline. A prescription version called Xenical is manufactured by Roche and sold by Glaxo.”

Currently the FDA has identified 13 confirmed cases of liver damage linked to Alli and Xenical. Xenical has been on the market since 1997 and available via doctor’s prescription. Alli, a newer consumer version of the weight loss drug, has been available over-the-counter since 2024.

Alli, which had sales nearing 300 million dollars in 2024, has been performing below Wall Street estimates. Poor sales of the lifestyle drug can be attributed to poor economic conditions as well as unpleasant side effects, such as anal leakage.

Doctors urge patients taking these weight loss pills to monitor signs of liver injury, including itching, yellow eyes and skin and loss of appetite.

Helping Teen Girls Avoid Diet Pills

Constantly bombarded by images of super skinny, size 0 models and movie stars such as Mary-Kate Olsen, teenage girls are sent overwhelming messages to be skinnier, smaller, and even tinier than ever. One tool that many young girls are turning to is the use of diet pills, such as hoodia and Hydroxycut.

A 2006 University of Minnesota found that more than 20% of 19-year-old girls confess to using diet pills. “These numbers are startling, and they tell us we need to do a better job of helping our daughters feel better about themselves and avoid unhealthy weight control behaviors,” University of Minnesota professor and study researcher Dianne Neumark-Sztainer said. (Neumark-Sztainer is also the author of the popular book, “I’m, Like, So Fat!“.)

Diet pills are ineffective and in many cases, extremely dangerous, even to the point of being linked to death in users. The study also found that more than 62% of teenage girls use unhealthy weight control behaviors, including the use of diet pills, laxatives, vomiting or skipping meals to control their weight. The study found that teenage males had rates that were less than half of the females. So, clearly, there is a problem facing our girls.

What can we do to help our daughters avoid these unhealthy actions? (more…)

Jillian Michaels Sued because of Diet Pill Claims

jillian michaels maximum strength calorie controlA class action lawsuit was filed last week in L.A. against Biggest Loser and weight loss guru Jillian Michaels. Named in the suit, Christie Christensen makes claims that she “was duped” into buying one of the supplements Michaels has recently lent her name to, Jillian Michaels Maximum Strength Calorie Control. Christensen’s suit is based on the claim that she was lead to believe the diet supplement’s advertised benefits would reduce her appetite or help her lose weight, which she says it did not.

“Ms. Michaels knows better — taking two pills before eating does not miraculously cause weight loss,” the lawsuit states, per The Associated Press.

Melissa Harnett, Christensen’s attorney who filed the suit, told TMZ, “Telling people you take two magic pills and then eat chocolate cake all day is a deception.”

As part of the suit, Christensen is suing Basic Research and ThinCare International, the Utah-based manufacturer of the multiple diet supplement products bearing Michaels’ name. (more…)

Dangerous Fake Alli Sold Online

GlaxoSmithKline, makers of the popular weight loss supplement Alli, are funding a documentary on the eating habits of Americans. They could also fund another documentary; this one on the industry of pirated drugs sold on the Internet… including their own Alli.alli

The counterfeit Alli looks a lot like the real Alli. But, the counterfeit pills are filled with sibutramine, not Orlistat – the main ingredient in authentic Alli.

The main difference between sibutramine and Orlistat is that the former is a substance that should not be used without a doctor’s oversight. Sibutramine is the active ingredient in the prescription weight loss drug Meridia. What’s worse, Alli is taken three times daily, while Meridia should only to be taken once a day.

So far, there is no word on the fake Alli making its way to brick and mortar retail outlets. According to GlaxoSmithKline, you can identify the fake, and potentially fatal, Alli by scoping out the following clues: (more…)

Alli Weight Loss Pill to Star in its Own Documentary

alliDo weight loss pills have a Hollywood “alli”? Glaxo, the pharmaceutical company that makes the popular weight loss supplement Alli, is financing a documentary about our eating habits. The company is going to partner with the Creative Coalition, a nonprofit social and political advocacy organization that has backing by entertainers like Alec Baldwin, Tim Daly and Susan Sarandon.

A spokesman for Glaxo says that an Academy Award-winning director will be named on January 25 at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Creative Coalition recently released a documentary directed by Barry Levinson called “PoliWood,” which examined politically active actors during the 2024 Republican and Democratic conventions. Group Wants Meridia Banned Due to Risk of Heart Deaths [UPDATE: Meridia Pulled from Market]

merida diet pill

UPDATE 10/8/10: Abbott Laboratories voluntarily pulls Meridia from the market “because clinical trial studies showed there was an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in people who used the drug.”

The consumer advocacy group, Public Citizen, is urging the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to yank the weight loss drug Meridia from the pharmacies all across the country because of its potentially life-threatening risks.

So far, 84 people taking Meridia have died following heart-related complications. While Meridia comes with clear warnings that it should not be taken by those who have high blood pressure, take MAO-inhibitors or take any other stimulant diet pills, Public Citizen is strongly petitioning the FDA to pull the serotonin-norepinephrine-reuptake inhibitor drug before more individuals are harmed or die.
