As the New Year approaches, many people are planning to ramp up their level of exercise and eat healthier in typical resolution fashion. To help us along with the desire to finally get healthy, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has partnered with the Surgeon General to launch the Healthy App Challenge. This program will invite developers to submit health, wellness and fitness apps and is designed to encourage Americans to pair technology with the effort to make healthier lifestyle decisions.
“The challenge will highlight a selection of mobile apps in support of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services efforts to empower individuals to make healthy choices using electronic technology,” the Surgeon General’s office said in a statement.

The holidays are officially here. Once those giant bags of candy hit the shelf, a war has been waged with our waistlines! Smoothie King wants to help you battle that war this season and has some great incentives to keep you fighting the good fight!
From now until December 18, 2011, Smoothie King is running its Fall Fit Campaign sweepstakes. The campaign is focused on motivating people to make better food choices and get moving this fall season.
For accountability, Smoothie King is challenging people to sign the “Oath of Oh Yes You Can” on their Facebook Fanpage. Signing the oath is a pledge to stay fit and it’s also an entry for their grand prize: two tickets to Super Bowl XLVI plus $1,000 for travel.
There’s more than just an oath and a prize entry, though. Additionally, Smoothie King has partnered with Journey Gym to provide health tips and motivation. Journey Gym, also known as the “laptop of fitness,” is a complete, lightweight, and compact universal gym. The health partners will also be giving away 10 Journey Gyms to lucky participants.

Are you ready for the annual Boorito celebration at Chipotle Mexican Grill? This Halloween from 6pm to close come in to your local Chipotle wearing a costume inspired by the family farm and score a $2 burrito, salad, bowl, or order of tacos. All proceeds up to $1 million will benefit Chipotle Cultivate foundation and Farm Aid.
You will also have an opportunity to enter their costume contest in which they are giving away over $7500! It’s not just adults who are making efforts to be healthy in the new year. Schools and kids all across the country are also eating and moving their way to a healthier 2011.
The Fuel Up to Play 60 is a nationwide program that has been encouraging kids and classrooms to healthy up their lives through an interactive challenge and contest for the past two years. Now, Fuel Up to Play 60 just announced that it’s accepting applications for 2011.
For those of you who don’t know what the program is all about, Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program. Launched by National Dairy Council and the National Football League in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the program encourages youth to consume nutrient-rich foods and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Multiple health and nutrition organizations and several major corporations are also supporting the program.

Our bodies are so stressed by the rigors of modern life we often switch our brains to autopilot without even noticing when faced with thousands of daily decisions. That’s one reason why it’s so hard to break habits and partly explains why we have to literally retrain our minds to achieve long-term dieting and health success.
