Dancing With the Stars Brings Major Changes for Contestants

Dancing With the Stars Season 11 premiered on Monday, September 20th, 2024. If you still don’t know, the contestant lineup is as follows:

  • Bristol Palin
  • Audrina Patridge
  • Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino
  • Michael Bolton
  • Kurt Warner
  • Kyle Massey
  • Rick Fox
  • Brandy
  • Jennifer Grey
  • Margaret Cho
  • Florence Henderson
  • David Hasselhoff (eliminated first)

The talent and dedication on Dancing With the Stars amazes me. Most contestants have to make major lifestyle changes in order to get into shape and build their talent for the show. Audrina Patridge recently spoke about her journey to do just that.

The Hills star has reportedly switched to a higher carb, high protein diet and eats approximately every two hours. It’s true that an abundance of carbohydrates are typically frowned upon in the diet community. The exception to this comes when you’re working your body as hard as she is! Athletes often stock up on carbs in order to fuel their bodies with what they need. She’s nearly given up alcohol (although she still enjoys the occasional glass of wine) and has substantially increased her water intake. These new habits have, no doubt, taken a hit on her social life. She tells OK! Magazine, “I’m focused on dancing, and that’s it.” (more…)

How to Cut Carbs

Pamela Ofstein is the Director of Nutrition Services at eDiets.com, a leading provider of weight loss services, information and products.

I think for many of us, when it comes to carbs, we can be our own downfall. It’s tough to limit and eat the right serving size . That could be because we don’t even know what a portion size is for most of our carb servings. Even we dietitians have to think twice on a few since, depending on the type of food (i.e. hot versus cold cereal), the portion sizes vary.

Eating less carbohydrates is fine, but the choices you make are more important when you pick out the carbs to eat and how much of the food you are eating (quantity/portion control). Basically, a slice of whole-grain bread with 3-5 grams of fiber could be a good choice, but if you are eating 3-4 slices at a sitting for example, your carb intake is a bit higher than it should be for most of us. The goal would be to have a slice or two and keep it to 1-2 servings of carbs at the meal. (more…)

The Best Diet to Fuel Your Run

The Best Diet for RunnersFollowing a healthy diet isn’t just important for weight loss. It also effects how you feel and your performance while working out. If you’re training for a marathon, or any other long-distance race, it’s important to fuel yourself with the right kinds of nutrients. Those who don’t eat enough while working out heavily risk feeling lightheaded or even fainting. To optimize your running, be sure to eat a balance of healthy carbs, protein, and fats (yes, even fats).

Carbs
You body needs carbs to be readily available to burn during exercise, and they should make up 45 percent to 65 percent of you daily diet. But beware! We don’t mean white bread and pasta. Most of your carbs should come from fruits, veggies, and dairy products like yogurt. Breads and cereals should be whole grain. Save high fiber foods for after your run, because your body will have a difficult time digesting them while you’re moving.

NoOodle, The No Calorie Noodle

If you’re  a pasta-loving, carb-watching health enthusiast, you’ve probably heard of or tried the Miracle Noodle, a zero-calorie noodle-like product that is made from the konjac plant.

The plant is sometimes referred to as elephant yam, even though it is an entirely different plant from the orange tuber yam that we are familiar with. Konjac is widely used in Japanese and Asian cuisines. It contains a kind of fiber called glucomannan, which has been associated with controlling blood sugar levels. The fiber is often used as a thickener in foods.

Now, a company called NoOodle has created an entire line of super low-calorie noodles and entrees.  (more…)

Lance Armstrong’s Workout Routine

Cyclist and fitness enthusiast Lance Armstrong, born September 18, 1971 in Plano, Texas, began running and swimming at a young age and rapidly progressed to competitive cycling and triathlons. He became a professional triathlete during his teen years and was the national sprint-course triathlon champion in 1989 and 1990. In 1993, Lance won the “Triple Crown” (Thrift Drug Classic, Kmart West Virginia Classic, and Core States Race), finished second at the Tour DuPont, and won the World Road Race Championship in Norway. In 1996, he rode for the U.S. Olympic team in Atlanta, Georgia where he finished sixth in time trials and twelfth in the road race.

Lance’s career was looking promising until he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The cancer had spread throughout his body (lungs and brain) before the doctors were aware of the disease. After several rounds of chemotherapy and surgeries, Lance was pronounced cancer-free in 1997. Miracles come true and Lance Armstrong has proven it. In 1999, he won the Tour de France and the world was amazed as he went on to become a seven-time Tour de France champion.

While he previously announced his retirement, this year, he’s back on his bike and participating in the 2024 Tour de France. (more…)

Specific Carb Diet Helps Autistic Children

The apparent increase of incidents of autism spectrum disorders (including Asperger’s syndrome), and the cause of this increase, have been the source of much concern and debate in recent years. Some parents hesitate or even refuse to allow their children to be given standard vaccinations, fearing mercury and other toxins. More recently the medical community is looking into dietary toxicity instead.

Sugars come in three forms – monosaccharides or “simple sugars,” disaccharides, and polysaccharides; however, our bodies can only absorb monosaccharides. When other sugars are ingested, your body must first break them down into monosaccharides.

Well, it’s almost summer again, which means the sometimes dreaded swimsuit season is here. If you have not already stepped up your workouts a little by now, it’s sure time to do so.

Many people often get the misconception that doing hundreds of crunches will get that flat, sexy stomach. Not true. Crunches do, however, work the core endurance and will obviously help.
