“Whoohoo, Makeover!”, On Episode 11 contestants got to strut their slimmer stuff on the Tyra Banks show in New York City. I feel the makeover show is one of the most powerful episodes that the Biggest Loser has every season. It allows contestants, as well as viewers, to see just how far they’ve come on their weight loss journey. That being said Ed, Heba, Vicky, Michelle, and Renee were whisked away for a shopping spree at Macy’s and treated to new hair styles at an incredible salon. The makeover episode is powerful in that it allows contestants the opportunity to realize that they can now shop off the rack, which for me was a tremendous personal victory. I would like to applaud each of the contestants on looking terrific!

After walking Tyra’s stage contestants were surprised by family members who flew out to New York to see their new and improved loved ones. While in New York contestants and family members decided to see the town and found themselves in the middle of Time Square, where Bob and Jillian miraculously appeared on a TV monitor. The Biggest Loser trainers congratulated contestants on their hot new look, but reminded them that they were still in the middle of a competition and that they had better spend their remaining time in the city working out. Contestants and their families took their trainers message to heart and the next day the blue team worked out at a newly opened 24 hour fitness, while the black team worked out in both Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge.

When the contestants returned to the ranch they were greeted with this week’s challenge which consisted of five boxes suspended over a pool of water. Contestants were then informed that they had to hold themselves up in the box while the bottom of each box was removed. The prize for this week’s challenge was the opportunity to spend two weeks in Utah at a weight loss spa. Vicky was the first to drop out followed by Heba, Ed, and finally Renee, leaving Michelle as the winner. Every contestant that lost dropped 25 feet to the waiting water below, that is except for Vicky who after the challenge was over needed some extra coaching from everyone to take the plunge.

At weigh-in we see some significant numbers lost: Vicky lost 4 lbs, Renee lost 4 lbs, Michelle lost 5 lbs, Ed lost 3 lbs, and Heba lost an astounding 7 lbs. In the end we see both Renee and Ed fall below the yellow line. Contestants are then ushered directly into the elimination room to cast their votes. Now we know that Michelle isn’t going to vote for Renee, and the Heba isn’t going to vote for Ed, so that leaves Vicky with the deciding vote yet again. Vicky remains loyal to her blue team and eliminates Renee. Now part of me was glad to see her maintain her loyalty to her fellow blue team members, but the other part of me can’t understand why given the chance she wouldn’t eliminate her biggest threat. Oh well, I guess only time will tell if her decision to eliminate Renee instead of Ed will pay off.

Renee looked wonderful at her at-home follow-up. I’d like to wish her continued success on her weight loss journey and congratulate her on how far she has come! Be sure to tune in next week, to cast your vote on who will be a finalist and who will be eliminated!

Bernie’s Biggest Loser Week 8 Recap from Diets in Review on Vimeo.

Episode 8 was packed with so much drama and nail biting twists that I actually found myself covering my eyes and all-out screaming at my TV at some points. This undoubtedly had to be the most action-packed episode to date. In Episode 8 we see all the contestants return for a chance to get back on the ranch. Participants were asked to weigh in and Phil had lost an amazing 68 pounds. followed by Ed who wasn’t far behind at 58 pounds lost. However, contestants weren’t being allowed back on the ranch based on weight loss, instead Ali announces that a challenge will take place to determine who returns.

The challenge consisted of a single step, however contestants had to step on on that step 1,000 times. The first contestant to reach 1,000 would be able to return to the ranch and also win immunity at the upcoming weigh in. The competition was pretty intense, Phil, formerly of the Red team, and Ed, formerly of the Orange team, both started off incredibly strong. In the end, the true competition wasn’t between Phil and Ed, it was Stacey, formerly of the Green team, who gave Ed a real run for his money! This week’s challenge was by no means easy, I just want to congratulate Ed for winning out in the end and returning to the ranch, and as for Stacy “You are Awesome”, great job everyone!

Another significant twist was announced in this episode by host Ali which was that everyone now has switched to singles. This is a huge turn in the game because it allows contestants to fully focus on their weight loss and not the weight loss of the entire team. It also allows for contestants to enter into the elimination room and vote not necessarily on alliances but in their own interest.

Switching to singles played an important part in this weeks weigh in. We see Brady and Michelle fall below the yellow line, anybody who has been following the show would have placed their bet on Michelle being eliminated, but to my surprise that isn’t how it played out. In this particular elimination Amy C. found herself in the interesting situation of determining who went home, she ended up voting to eliminate Brady and truly shocked everyone, myself included.

In his follow-up interview Brady looked fantastic! He is already in a size 34 waist and in no way appears to be complacent, rather extremely driven. Everyone I would watch out, Brady now has the opportunity to focus solely on his weight loss and not on game play, the At-Home Prize could very well find itself in the pocket of Brady’s size 34 jeans! Keep up the great work!

Bernie’s Biggest Loser Week 7 Recap from Diets in Review on Vimeo.

Let me just start off by saying, “Good for Bob!” He pulled his team aside, mainly Vicky and Brady, and asked if there was game play involved in Brady’s 2 lbs. weight loss last week. They concluded that his weight loss was attributed to Brady not eating as often as he should, not sure I’m sold on that conclusion, but oh well.

Contestants then played a game modeled after an amazing book called “Eat This, Not That,” which shares with people the calories behind some of the food choices we make. It was very insightful, and I personally enjoy the book, so I’m glad to see it mentioned on the show.

Now for the DRAMA! Heba and the rest of the Blue team thought it was time to confront Phil on the Black Team about his talk with Brady on the basketball court. I think it was a good thing to have the discussion, but I disagree with how the Blue team went about it. I think the conversation should have been had strictly between Heba and Phil, but that wasn’t the case and in the end I don’t feel anything was really resolved.

The Challenge was a good one this week. Contestants were placed on a pulley system 50 ft. up in the air and forced to support their weight. The Black team had to add an additional 40 lbs. to their overall weight because they lost the “Eat This, Not That” Challenge. In the end, the Blue team won out and as a result were allowed to choose one team member of on the Black team whose weight would not count at the weigh-in.

At Weigh-in the Blue team decided to have Michelle’s weight not count, which in the end didn’t make much of a difference because she only lost 2 lbs. The rest of the Black team had lower numbers this week, which is sort of to be expected given their big numbers last week. The shocker came when Brady on the Blue team pulled a 13 lbs. weight loss, which is huge, he took out the Black team all by himself!

The Black team went to elimination and after a hard decision decided to sent Phil home. Phil went home honorably and wished his fellow Black Team members the best of luck. Phil’s homecoming was one of the best yet, he renewed his vows to Amy, at the very place he proposed. Phil is looking terrific, and seems to be doing awesome at home!

Well the game is proving to get better and better each week. Be sure to tune in Nov. 11 (Biggest Loser is not airing next week due to the election) as it appears there is going to be a game changing twist!
