The Master Cleanse is Nothing More than a Dangerous Fad

America’s obsession with rapid weight loss regimens has produced yet another unnatural diet. The glamorously titled “master cleanse” is a trending diet among celebrities and those who want to succeed in weight loss without really trying. The master cleanse is a 10-day fast wherein the only thing you ingest is a concoction made of warm water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup, and it’s extremely unhealthy. Sounds pretty awful, but Beyonce and Gwyneth did it, so why can’t you?

The cleanse begins each day with a “salt water flush,” which can accurately be described as slamming a glass of salt water while trying not to puke. The lemon juice cocktail is designed to rid the body of harmful toxins so you can start fresh after the cleanse. While a liquid diet is almost guaranteed to help you lose weight fast, it’s the wrong kind of weight. The body will shed muscle mass and water weight, but fat remains.

Starvation also does funny things to the body. Severely reducing your caloric intake can make you impatient, dizzy, moody, and less focused. It can lead to insomnia, skin breakouts, bizarre behavior, and in some cases, shrink your heart volume. After a period of starvation, it takes a long time for your brain and your body to get along again. People coming down from a fast have a hard time satisfying their appetite, and binge eat because of it. One study found that men who had fasted gained back an additional 10% of their body weight after a fast. (more…)

Fruitarian Diet Hospitalizes Ashton Kutcher

Fruits are good for you, yes? They are filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and other wholesome nutrients. If your diet is made up of just fruits though, you might be out of your mind. Ashton Kutcher was when he started eating only fruits for a film role.

Kutcher stars in the upcoming film “jOBS,” in which he plays the late Steve Jobs. In order for Kutcher to look like the skinny and lanky Jobs, he had to shed some weight and do it fast. Jobs had been known to practice odd eating habits, which influenced Kutcher’s diet. There was a time when Jobs gave up meat and only ate fruit, and that’s how Kutcher found the Fruitarian Diet .

For a couple of months, Ashton ate nothing but fruit to lose weight. Then, right before filming, it is reported that he was hospitalized because of serious health issues. The actor said, “I was like doubled over in pain, and my pancreas levels were completely out of whack, which was completely terrifying considering everything.” Kutcher concluded that his hospitalization was due to his strict fruit diet. Katy Perry is Popchips’ New Pop Star Endorser

A pop star signed to be the spokesperson for Popchips! Today’s news that Katy Perry will now be representing the “healthy” chip brand seems like a pretty perfect match. As perfect a match as salt, vinegar, and crispy potatoes.

More and more music stars are branching out from behind the microphone these days and creating personal brands that extend from perfume to clothes, and apparently potato chips. In a press release from the brand they name Perry as not only a new celebrity representative but also an investor. The singer will be working with them as a creative partner.

She isn’t the first famous face to enjoy this tasty snack. Ashton Kutcher is featured in advertisements for the brand; Katy’s face will start donning ads this fall. The campaign will be their first national advertising push, and “will combine Katy’s unique style and personality with our mission to put the fun back in snacking,” said a release at Popchips.com. Celebrity Dudes Who Downward Dog (and Why More Men Should)

There is an allusive stereotype surrounding yoga. To most, yoga is thought of as constantly stretching and stereotyped as a flimsy workout out. Yoga is popular among women, but men are hesitant to take a yoga class.

Jill Lawson, DietsInReview.com’s yoga expert, offers her take on why men avoid yoga. “One of the biggest reasons is the belief that they are not flexible enough to do yoga. I have heard men tell me they would try it, but they can’t touch their toes.”

Yoga is more than being able to reach your toes. Practicing yoga can benefit individuals in ways they would never imagine. At yoga classes you tend to see more women than men, but yogi men aren’t kidding around when it comes to their own practice. All yoga studios encourage men to give it a try. If the benefits aren’t selling men, maybe seeing male celebrities deeply committed will.

Adam Levine

When he isn’t hitting high notes with Maroon 5 or judging fresh-faced artists on The Voice, Adam Levine practices yoga routinely. In the beginning of his career the singer didn’t practice yoga because of the stereotypes surrounding yoga. After years of pain from weights at the gym, Adam took a yoga class. He noticed the difference with his body and hasn’t stepped foot in a gym since. His godly physique is quite impressive. We say, keep on practicing, Adam, because from the looks of it yoga is doing your body well! (more…)

Yes, Divorce Can Make You Sick. Demi Moore’s Health Concerns Likely Due to Stress

This week I read an article at Yahoo! Shine titled Demi Moore: Hospitalized: Can Divorce Make You Sick? Of course, divorce can make you sick! Stress plays a major role in our physical health, and divorce is the second most stressful life event one can experience after the death of a spouse, according to the Homes and Rahe Stress Scale. On the other hand, I have talked with many clients who find the stress from a break up longer lasting because it includes rejection and the possibility of running into that person again. Loss of appetite and not eating are common after any break up. Many find sleep evasive as well. The strong emotional reaction can be physically exhausting, too.

Any time that we are stressed our immune system takes a hit, our digestion takes a hit, and our body is flooded with adrenaline which can have a variety of dangerous results. It was when I learned how adrenaline impacts our veins and arteries and increases the risk for blockage and heart attack that I stubbornly determined to control my stress. Perhaps it is because I am a therapist, but it seems that many people focus on the mental and emotional impact of stress, more than the physical impact of stress, which can have long term consequences. When dealing with daily stressors, it is essential to recover from the adrenaline response because most of the time “fight or flight” is not a helpful option whether you have a deadline, a complaining customer, or an argument with a spouse. Ashton and Demi do the Master Cleanse for their Health

The Hollywood elite are at it again. Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, the cutest of all cougar couples, have started the Master Cleanse. Ashton tweeted the intentions of he and his wife letting the masses know about their new regimen.

Some health food stores sell Master Cleanse kits, but most followers of the strict liquid diet prepare their own, using a simple recipe of water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. Also known as the Lemonade Diet and the Maple Syrup Diet, Beyonce Knowles has long been linked with this detox cleanse to help her maintain those svelte curves.

Six to 12 glasses of the concoction are drank throughout the day for up seven to ten days. Ashton’s tweet said that he and Demi would do it for ten. A restrictive diet like this can lend itself to binges. Ashton probably didn’t follow through, but his tummy was definitely craving something more than the Master Cleanse drink when he tweeted “9 hrs into the master cleanse. I want a steak, a beer, and a blow-pop. Hmmm this is gonna be rough.” (more…)
