Britney Spears Used Interval Training and Football to Prepare for Vegas Show

Britney's new Vegas BodyIn preparation for her upcoming 90-minute Las Vegas show at Planet Hollywood, Britney Spears has been getting down and dirty with an intense exercise regimen. Last week, everyone’s favorite ex-girl next door shared a picture of her rockin’ bod in just a bikini. The public has always been obsessed with Britney’s weight fluctuations and style choices, so it came as no shock when the photo set the blogosphere abuzz.

Britney’s workout regimen is called “Trickeration” and incorporates interval training into sports like tennis and football. Interval training involves quick bursts of hardcore exercise followed by a long rest, like sprinting for 30 seconds and then jogging for a minute. Her trainer, Tony Martinez, says Britney has absolutely thrived with the strenuous sessions, and that she is a natural athlete.

During the 40 minute workouts, she’s apparently been serving the tennis ball like Serena Williams and can throw the pigskin with a Manning-esque spiral. In an interview with E!Online, Martinez said, “She is mentally and physically 100 percent ready for Vegas.” Details of Britney’s Vegas stint—which begins in December—are scarce, but it sounds like it will be a fast-paced and extraordinary affair. Here’s how other Vegas performers get in shape for their shows.

Pink Slime is Back: Why do School Districts Continue to Serve Dreadful Byproduct?

It’s baaaack. Pink slime, an ammonia and beef byproduct that spurred one of the most talked about controversies in 2024, is being reintroduced to school lunches now that the media spotlight has dimmed. School districts in Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are patiently waiting for their pink slime burgers to ship from the USDA, all to save mere pennies on the dollar.

Shocking as that may sound, schools in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota never stopped serving the pseudo beef. Beef Product Incorporated is the company that makes and sells pink slime, formally known as “ammonia-treated lean finely textured beef,” or LFTB. In layman’s, LFTB is unwanted bits of cow mixed with ammonia and sent through a centrifuge—just like mom used to make. This process was invented by Beef Product Inc to help get the most possible product out of cows. Then, they sell it for cheap, hence the reason school districts bought it in the first place—to save money.

Wealth is Health: Poorest States Trend Highest for Obesity, Cancer, and Poor Dental Health

As Americans, we’re competitive people. It’s in our blood. Speaking of blood and competition, a recently released infographic breaks down state by state statistics in categories like obesity, dental health, STDs, cancer rates, and several other quaint reminders of life’s frailty. Thanks to the Top Masters in Health Care—who meticulously compiled the data—you can now see how much better your state is compared to the other union territories! Naturally, we are most concerned with the obesity and health related numbers, and after a quick look, we noticed a disturbing trend. The statistical data suggested that obesity, loss of teeth and cancer were all closely correlated. How could this be? (more…)

Chickity China the Chinese Processed Chicken: Americans on Alert for Frozen Processed Chicken Imports

http://youtu.be/-URbU-U1dg4

  • The USDA has agreed to let four Chinese chicken processing companies begin to ship meat to the United States, sparking debate about food safety.
  • Just seven months ago, thousands of American dogs either died or became sick after eating jerky treats with chicken from Chinese food processing plants.
  • China, a country that has had outbreaks of avian flu in recent years, has a nightmarish track record with food manufacturing. Animals are mistreated and processed in filthy conditions, and just this summer a Chinese poultry plant caught fire and killed 120 people.
  • As of now, China will only be allowed to process cooked meat from birds that were raised in the U.S. How does that make sense from an efficiency standpoint? The birds will be raised and cooked in the US, sent to China for processing, only to be shipped back again.
  • Chinese chicken will not be labeled, so the next time you have a nugget or frozen chicken finger, it very well could have been made in a sketchy Chinese factory. That’s fowl play. (more…)

‘Eat, Drink, Vote’ Slams Corporate Food Politics Through Cartoons

Despite the dedicated work of doctors, bloggers, and health professionals everywhere, America remains one nation overweight. As we become more and more entrenched in a full fledged war against obesity, maybe the cartoonists will save us all. At least that’s what acclaimed diet and nutrition expert Marion Nestle hopes will happen with the release of her ninth book, “Eat, Drink, Vote: An Illustrated Guide to Food Politics.”

eat drink vote

After a life time of publishing pointed literature on the subject of food politics, Nestle thought the humor of cartoons was the perfect medium. With over 250 of Nestle’s favorite food cartoons, she hopes to deliver cheeky and insightful criticisms at the food industry and its politics. She told USA Today that comics relay “complicated conceptual information at a glance, and if they are good, make it funny, sharp, ironic, and sometimes even sarcastic.” Our resident nutrition expert Mary Hartley, RD has followed Nestle’s career with great interest, and believes the lightheartedness of cartoons fit perfectly with Nestle’s sense of humor.

Octavia Spencer Sues Sensa for $700,000 After Sponsorship Goes Sour

The proverbial chocolate pie is hitting Sensa in the face, magic diet sprinkles and all. Octavia Spencer, the actress who won an Oscar for her performance in “The Help,” is suing the weight loss company Sensa for alleged fraud and breach of contract. Sensa markets tiny crystals called “tastants,” designed to be sprinkled on all types of food with the intention of making the eater feel fuller faster, thus eating less. It’s supposed to be automatic portion control, and when Spencer lost five pounds on the stuff last August, a $1.25 million sponsorship deal quickly materialized, tastants fall as they may.

But as with all sponsorships, marketing campaigns hinge on a fickle balance of popularity and exposure, and Sensa decided Spencer wasn’t exactly a trending topic. The company wasn’t pleased with the lackluster social media response generated by Spencer’s dimming star, and began to find a way out of the contract. (more…)

The Aaron Rodgers Burger – Nobody Should Tackle This Gut Bomb

The National Football League, the most profitable and popular professional sports league in America, kicks off regular season play in less than a week. Six years ago, the NFL put its massive appeal to good use, founding the Play 60 program to tackle childhood obesity and encourage a more active generation of children. Most NFL media coverage is centered around head injuries, Fantasy Football, murder charges and twitter rants, but the league continues to make strides fighting the obesity epidemic with national activities for kids. However, when a few members of the Green Bay Packers had the opportunity to design their own hamburger recipes to be sold at Curly’s Pub in Lambeau field on game days, they did not have health on the brain and undermined the efforts of Play 60.

A Rodgers Burger

While Play 60 aims to get children to play for 60 minutes a day, anyone who eats the Aaron Rodgers burger will need to play for 120 minutes after they wake up from their food coma. The Aaron Rodgers burger does not come with an artery brush, but it should. Here’s what you get: bacon, swiss and havarti cheese, avocado, pickles, jalapeno, onion rings, mayo, ranch, and PEANUT BUTTER—all with a side of fresh Wisconsin cheese curds. Just like mom used to make—if she hated you. Peanut butter is a trending burger topping, but next to ranch, mayo, and avocado, it seems like a flavor rainbow from hell. (more…)

UN Declares 2024 ‘The Year of Quinoa’; Our Favorite Quinoa Recipes

The United Nations dubbed 2024 as the International Year of Quinoa back in February, cementing the seed’s rise as a bona fide superfood after several years of growing popularity. Looking to strengthen food security, create jobs, and promote nutrition on a global level, choosing the ancient and perennial quinoa plant must have been a no-brainer for the UN.

This is not to say the abundant benefits of quinoa are anything new. I first remember seeing quinoa at a health foods grocer in 2006, and as an 18 year old college student, it wasn’t pizza so I didn’t give it a second thought. Since 2006, quinoa has exploded into our collective food consciousness and the price of the crop has nearly tripled. The grain-like quinoa—it’s technically a “pseudo cereal”—is nothing new to the people of Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, who’ve been growing it for over 5,000 years. (Side not: part of the UN’s campaign may be related to the fact that the rising popularity of quinoa in rich countries means the very people who’ve cultivated the crop for multiple millennia can’t even afford to purchase it now.) The quinoa crop is exceptionally adaptable, thriving in below freezing and 100 degree temperatures.

The “Hey N Sync, Please Reunite at the VMAs” Gym Music Playlist

*N Sync is back, but unfortunately, this time around there are strings attached. When Lance Bass posted an Instagram photo of himself and former ‘syncers Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick at a Justin Timberlake concert, someone, somewhere on the Internet typed “reunion,” and the social media rumor mill began churning. Given the fact that JT will be accepting the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award at Sunday night’s MTV VMAs—which have already been shrouded in mystery—we’re saying there’s a chance.

Since anybody under the age of 35 holds a special place in their hearts for JT’s backup singers—they were our British Invasion after all—we decided to find out if and how the Grammy winners were staying in shape. No longer able to rely on youthful metabolism and free from the pressure of sex symbol status—just kidding, JT—it would be understandable if the group of 30 somethings had let themselves go. (more…)
