Camilla Duchess of Cornwall Warns Teens Against Fad Dieting

Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall, is championing a new cause these days: Her concern for teens and the path they’re heading down with their diets, which could lead them to a life of suffering from Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects the bones, making them fragile and easily breakable. Currently nearly 3 million people in the UK are suffering from the disease, and more than 250,000 fractures occur every year as a result.

Some suspect it’s the non-dairy and wheat-free fad diets that are putting these teens at risk. If they fail to build their bone strength up prior to reaching the age of 35, their chances of developing the disease are much higher.

“To unite with all of you today is so important, to get the message worldwide to people that it can be prevented,” said Bowles.

The Duchess has such as strong opinion regarding this topic as both her grandmother and mother have been affected by the disease. She watched her mother lose 8 inches in height and suffer from serious digestion issues as a result, which eventually led to hear death at the young age of 72. Her personal experience with the disease in her family led to her become the President of the National Osteoporosis Society in the UK. (more…)

Yoga Helps Maintain Buttock Lift Procedure Known as the S-Curve

For years now, society has placed an emphasis on breast augmentation, making it the top cosmetic surgical procedure in the U.S. However, recent trends are starting to show that more and more women are becoming less concerned about having exaggerated breast sizes because they’re more concerned about obtaining the “S-Curve” look…a curvier buttock shape.

The S-Curve Buttock Lift is the latest trending plastic surgery procedure that everyone’s not only talking about, but actually having done. Though it’s not new, it’s recently been altered so that it’s much safer than before and results are much more predictable. The surgery consists of taking natural body fat from other parts of the woman’s body, such as her abdominals, thighs and even arms, and shifting it to her derriere in order to give a more shapely and sexy silhouette. The goal is to mimic famous rumps like those on Kim Kardashian or Pippa Middleton.

So what does yoga have to do with all of this? Certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ashkan Ghavami, a global leader in performing and perfecting this operation, works with a trained yoga instructor who has designed customized yoga routines that aid S-Curve procedure patients in continued maintenance of their new and improved curvy buttocks. These yoga routines are designed to help improve the patient’s muscle strength and development that in turn improves blood flow. Patients are advised to start the yoga program before their procedure is done and continue with it afterwards with a more advanced routine. These advanced yoga poses will aid in maintaining, toning and optimizing the patient’s new body shape. (more…)

Obie the Obese Dachshund Falls Into Custody Battle

Obie, America’s famous obese dachshund, has found himself in the middle of a custody battle between his foster care provider, Nora Vanatta, and the Oregon Dachshund Rescue group, which claims to be his rightful owners.

This pudgy pooch recently weighed in at 77 pounds and is now required to wear a harness so his body doesn’t drag the ground. It’s only a matter of steps before the poor thing is worn to pieces. Obie has made several TV appearances, including one last month on the TODAY Show. He’s also currently on the top of the Yahoo search list.

Nora Vanatta is a former veterinarian technician from Portland, Oregon and is currently taking care of Obie, doing what she can to reach him to the goal weight of 40 pounds.

According to Vanatta, he’s already lost 15 pounds. It wasn’t long after taking Obie into her care that Vanatta fell into puppy love with the pooch. She even created a Facebook page that tracks his weight loss, which now has more than 66,000 fans. (more…)

Saturday Morning Drills: Kettlebell Strength Training

For this week’s Saturday Morning Drill we’re diving into something a bit different. We’re switching things up and confusing those muscles by incorporating a kettlebell.

Kettlebells are a handle-style weight typically made of cast-iron that ranges in weight between 5-105 pounds. They can be found at most major retailers for a reasonably low price, usually between $10-$15. In addition to being affordable and easy to store, they’re also the perfect tool for strength, flexibility and ballistic training, and can also incorporated into cardiovascular activity as well.

Among its many benefits, kettlebell training can aid with core stability, balance, coordination, blood circulation, muscle tone and fat loss, and can also help increase energy levels, improve sleep and boost self esteem. Sign us up!

It’s pretty common for females to be intimidated by weight training, but kettlebells are a great option for performing exercises comfortably in your very own home. They’re also great for switching things up and confusing your muscles. Your body can easily get used to a particular exercise if you perform it on a consistent basis. When this happens your workout isn’t as beneficial as it was the first few times you performed it, leaving you with less-than-desirable results.

NOTE: Please be sure to carefully follow the instructions for this routine. Performing a kettlebell exercise incorrectly can cause injury. If you’re unsure about how to perform an exercise correctly, do not attempt it before asking a personal trainer at your local gym in order to avoid risk of injury.

Food and Clothing Labels Lie: Are You Aware and Do You Care?

When you grab a bite to eat somewhere, there are particular decisions you have to make. Obviously, what you’re going to eat but also what size you’re going to order. You may have noticed how the different sizes vary by each restaurant/fast food chain. What you may not have noticed is a small order at one place might be considered a medium at another. For example, you’re at Burger King and ask for a small order of fries because you want to be conscious of the amount you’re eating, but if you had gone to McDonald’s that same small order at Burger King would have been considered a medium. Would this make a difference in your decision making?

Aradhna Krishna, a marketing professor at the University of Michigan, has performed studies over this labeling phenomena. What she found is that food sizes have become larger over time. “So, that same hamburger has become bigger, the french fries have become bigger, and again this is leading to obesity,” said Krishna on NPR.

Krishna wanted to learn if the label was truly making a difference in what size consumers bought. In order to do so, she conducted an experiment where she offered participants a cookie. One was given a label as “medium” and the other was given a label as “large.” The catch was that both were actually the exact same size. The results proved the theory and showed that more people chose the “medium” cookie over the large.

“Just because there’s a different size label attached to the same actual quantity of food, people eat more. But also, think they’ve not eaten as much,” said Krishna. “Sizes should be more uniform and that will only help the consumer because you’ll know what you’re getting.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a “large” soda today is six times bigger than a “large” soda in the 1950s. Past studies have also shown that by eating off a smaller plate, people can sometimes overestimate the serving size they’ve been given, and drinking beer from a glass that’s straight as opposed to one that’s curvy can help people keep better track of how much they’ve drank. VIDEO: TV Anchor Stands Up for Herself in Honor of Anti-Bullying Month

Jennifer Livingston of WKBT-TV (CSB affiliate) in LaCrosse, Wisc. recently received an e-mail from a viewer who called her out by saying she’s “overweight and obese” and that she should reconsider her physical responsibility as a public personality. He backed his harmful comments up by saying she’s not setting a good example to children when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.

Instead of taking these harsh comments in the worst way possible and beating herself up over it, the morning show host fought back against the viewer on public television. “The truth is, I am overweight,” she admitted in a candid and honest segment. “You can call me fat and yes, even obese on a doctor’s chart. To the person who wrote me that letter, do you think I don’t know that? Your cruel words are pointing out something I don’t see? You don’t know me. You are not a friend of mine. You are not a part of my family, and you admitted that you don’t watch this show so you know nothing about me besides what you see on the outside — and I am much more than a number on a scale,” asserted Livingston.

She continued with an inspirational speech to her viewers by saying, “We are better than that bully. We are better than this email. We are better than the bullies that would try to take us down.” (more…)

The Hottest Celebrity Abs and Their Winning Workouts and Diets

Now that summer’s over, it’s time for a recap of this year’s hottest abs. These stars spill the favorite workout and diet tips they live by on a daily basis.

The Workout

We found that a majority of them were doing was some sort of weight resistance training. Why is this such a popular choice? It’s pretty simple actually. The more muscle the body has, the more fat it burns. And I don’t mean JUST during the workout either. After a good and hard weight resistance training session, the body will continue to burn calories hours after the workout is complete. (A great weight resistance exercise that hits the abdominals at the same time is heavy squat lifting.) (more…)

Lady Gaga’s recent 25-30 pound weight gain is easily noticeable on her small frame of 5’1″. With no surprise, it’s got the media riled up. The weird part is many of you never would have noticed if it wasn’t for the media’s harsh and criticizing remarks.

The pop star fought back with no hesitation by posting photos of herself wearing nothing but her yoga bra and panties. The Flex Belt Not Recommended for Fat Loss, but May Enhance Abs

Something I saw on TV a couple months ago caught my attention. It’s called the Flex Belt. It’s made to tone, strengthen and firm your abdominals. As I watched the commercial, I was thinking it had to be too good to be true, but if I had access to try it out, I totally would. So I did.

The day the Flex Belt came in the mail, I was actually pretty excited (which was surprising due to the lack of faith I had in it). One of the first things I did when I got home was put it on the charger. I read the directions, went through the different programs available, and started my abdominal workout as soon as the magic machine was ready. At the first moment I felt its contractions, I bursted with laughter. I really didn’t know what to think of it. I couldn’t tell if it was tickling me or if I just wasn’t used to it (probably a little of both).

I began experimenting with its different levels and programs. I was actually amazed by the intensity levels it can rise to. The Flex Belt truly was working out my abs! Now, it wasn’t the same type of workout that I would get doing the ab machines at the gym, but I could definitely feel my muscles at work without me having to worry about making sure I put in the effort myself.
