“I hope I look half that good when I’m her age” is a likely sentiment upon seeing Vera Wang stunning in a one-piece, strapless swimsuit in Harper’s Bazaar this month. At 62, the renowned designer is slender, fit, and the embodiment of health.
Wang isn’t promoting her diet or fitness regimen, instead the article focuses on the new home she purchased in LA, a place she calls ‘the yin to my New York yang.”
While the world knows her best as a brilliant wedding dress designer, there was a time when people knew her better for her footwear. Ice skates to be exact. She was a competitive figure skater in her youth. In fact, this spring she’ll be honored at the Figure Skating in Harlem Skating with the Stars benefit. Attendees will have an opportunity to skate with Wang.
It’s not clear how often Wang takes to the ice, but even if it’s a moderate hour here and there, ice skating is a serious workout that can burn 500 calories. As well, it’s a great activity for working out the legs, in particular the hamstrings and quads and you’ll also pay some attention to the back and abs. Read Full Post >
There’s only a week left in January, and you’ve no doubt got your mind more focused on February being a week away than you do the new year celebration that was just three weeks ago.
How’s that resolution treating you? In England, 92 percent of dieters have already let their resolution go. We’re not that different from the English. Whether you’ve forgotten, abandoned, or given up on yours, there are probably a lot of reasons you left yet another resolution behind.
We’re not saying it to beat you up, we raise the conversation to light a fire in you and have you reassess those goals. Your health is most important – more so than a lot of the reasons you can probably come up with for avoiding the issue.
We’re taking your best excuses and knocking them down, and showing you that behind every excuse is a better answer. Put yourself, and your health, first this year.
Think you don’t have time, don’t have the money, or that you’ll start tomorrow? We’ve got your number.
This spring, Cary Williams-Nunez and her husband Angelo Nunez will hit the road to tour schools in ten cities for their Knocking Out Obesity Tour. In its second year, it’s something that Cary worked hard to bring to life.
It was initially something she thought about in 2007 and took a few years to put all the pieces in place to make it happen. She is a boxing star in her own right, and co-owns Primetime Boxing with her husband. They put down their gloves and last year turned some of their focus to being part of the solution in the childhood obesity epidemic by completing their first Knocking Out Obesity tour.
This spring, The Nunez’s Knocking Out Obesity tour will visit another ten cities, including three elementaries and seven middle schools. Their stops will include Chicago, Buffalo, Birmingham, New Orleans, four cities in Texas, and DC, where she’s hoping to score some face time with Mrs. Obama.
They start by looking at the list of top 25 fattest cities, that publishes annually, and then select 10 cities to visit. Then, they choose one school in each city. They primarily visit middle schools, with some elementary, and try to schedule with their PE classes. The response? Read Full Post >
The 2012 Super Bowl lineup was decided last night, as the AFC and the NFC champions were named. The New England Patriots and the New York Giants will meet February 5 in Indianapolis for Super Bowl XLVI. This isn’t the first time these Eastern teams have met at the NFL championship game, they faced on in 2008, too. In that game, each team broke records: The Giants set a record for the most consecutive wins away from home in a single season; and the Patriots tied a record for most catches in a Super Bowl. Time will tell which records they’ll set this year.
One record fans seem to try to outdo every year is how much they eat. Unless you’re playing as hard, and working out as much, as the guys on the field, you probably don’t need to consume thousands of calories by way of queso, chips, burgers, and beer. Sure, it’s fun, but it’s possible to have all of that food enjoyment without the disastrous calorie bloat that won’t make anyone MVP.
Serve these recipes inspired by the hometowns of the two Super Bowl teams. They look and taste just as good as their original versions, but will save you from going overboard on the second biggest food holiday of the year.
Buzz is building for the 2012 Super Bowl ads before we even know who will compete in Indianapolis. Trend watchers say that pets and sex will continue to sell to the largest TV-viewing audience of the year; more people will watch than will vote in November.
While most are tuning in to watch the final football game of the NFL season, many are watching solely for the commercials. Last year, the healthiest thing about those ads was Jillian Michaels’ appearance in the GoDaddy. This year, we’ve found one healthy food item being advertised amongst a gluttonous roster of chips, beer, and soda.
Dannon’s Oikos Greek Yogurt will make its Super Bowl debut this year, and will win MVP for healthiest product advertised. With only 120 calories for a 5.3-ounce serving, there are no more ingredients in Oikos than are necessary. John Stamos will present Oikos in the commercial as “possibly the best Greek yogurt in the world,” and stats will say blind taste-testers prefer Oikos 2-to-1 against Chobani. Organic sugar, organic blueberries, organic elderberry juice, organic nonfat milk, and five cultures are all it takes to make these slender cup of yogurt.
