Withings Scale Brings WiFi to Your Weigh-In

With so many diet and weight-loss tools available online, it seems to make sense that wireless scales would come to market. These online scales advertise benefits of improved or even faster weight loss, and while I don’t think a scale will ever have the power to remove those unwanted pounds, there are several benefits specific to the Withings scale that are definitely worth highlighting.

Charting your weight online is a great resource, as it provides you a reference from week to week and month to month. I especially like this, as it may help bring light to time periods where you may have gained weight. What happened during that time period? Was it the holidays? Were you on vacation? Were you going through a tough time? This reflection will help you understand your eating and activity habits to enact changes if need be. (more…)

Do You Know What is in Your Water?

Did you know that your water may not be as clean as you think? I recently had my routine physical with standard testing and blood work done and when the results came back I was surprised to learn that I had elevated lead levels. Chatting with my doctor, we discussed the sources of lead, which can be the following:

  • Paint
  • Dust
  • Soil
  • Drinking water
  • Children’s toys
  • Lead-glazed ceramics
  • Car batteries
  • Radiators
  • Some inks

Popchips Alternative to Fried Potato Chips

Potato chips are one of the most popular American snack foods. They come in more flavors and variations than one could ever dream. From the fried (which are totally unhealthy), to the baked versions (which can sometimes lack flavor), a new chip is on the block.

Popchips are made through the “popping” process of adding heat and pressure to keep only half the fat of fried potato chips. Not a bad start to making these chips easier on the waist line.

Gluten-Free Baking Products From America’s Oldest Flour Company

I love baguettes! Something about a fresh baked French stick to dip in olive oil or put on a yummy spread is such a delicious treat. As one of the thousands who must avoid wheat and/or gluten, I could never find an option that was gluten-free and suitable for my diet.

That is until I was introduced to King Arthur Flour Company. Founded in 1790, King Arthur Flour Company is America’s oldest flour company. Clearly they know what they are doing, and with the company being 100-percent employee owned, each individual is fully invested in its success and growth.

David Beckham Trades Soccer for Chocolate

The World Cup, one of the biggest sporting events worldwide, is kicking off this month. But one very famous player will not be on the field: David Beckham. Unfortunately, an injury is prohibiting Beckham from training and practicing, which means the British soccer player will not be representing his English team in South Africa when the World Cup tournament begins.

Instead of training with his teammates and flashing those abs we’ve all come to know on the field and off in Versace advertisements, David Beckham has been seen indulging in some of his favorite gut-busting foods. From L.A.’s In-and-Out Burger to chocolates, it seems perhaps missing the World Cup is driving this increase in snacking and leading to larger pant sizes.

McDonald’s Happy Meal Makeover

McDonald’s Restaurants in Canada are changing things up when it comes to some of the Happy Meal options on their menu. These child-oriented meals are going to be altered to have lower sodium in such items as the grilled chicken snack wrap. While this change entails decreasing the excess sodium in a variety of products, my hope is that this will lead to impacting other menu items as well.

This move comes at a time when the focus in Canada and the rest of the world are working to counteract the obesity and health crisis we are all facing. Fast food restaurants often find the finger being pointed at them for contributing to the epidemic, which makes these types of changes extremely important.
