The Culprit for Food Addiction is Dopamine, Says Dr. Nora Volkow

Last year we found, and republished, an interesting graphic that pondered a curious question - which is worse, soda or marijuana? A side-by-side comparison of the two pits the processed against the natural, the legal versus the illegal. While we could debate the pros and cons of each all day long, to the pleasure center of the brain, they are one in the same.

A fascinating piece aired on CBS’ 60 Minutes tonight with the foremost researcher on addiction, Dr. Nora Volkow, head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In 2007, she was named by Time Magazine as one “of the 100 men and women whose power, talent or moral example is transforming the world.” Tonight’s Hooked: Why Bad Habits are Hard to Break explained the chemistry behind addiction and showed that whether it’s a hamburger or heroine, soda or marijuana, our brain sees them exactly the same – as triggers for a rush of dopamine.

Morley Safer reported and described Dr. Volkow as the woman who has “revolutionized how science and medicine view addiction: as a disease, not a character defect.” She told him that the “Just Say No” campaign is just “magic of thinking.”

“If it were that easy…there’d be no obesity,” or other physical signs of addiction. In other words, addiction stems from deep within the pleasure center of our brains, and all the willpower, support, and motivation in the world can’t always turn it off.

Biggest Loser’s Sam and Stephanie Plan to Marry April 28

The long awaited nuptials of Biggest Loser’s Sam Poueu and Stephanie Anderson are finally here! People reported today that the couple is getting married tomorrow, April 28, in San Francisco, California.

The gorgeous couple met as contestants on Biggest Loser season nine, and immediately hit it off. While the two were there looking for weight loss they ended up finding love. They lost weight too, a lot in fact! Sam lost more than 130 pounds and Stephanie lost 99 pounds. No proposal happened at the live finale for their season, but a few months later, during filming for a Where Are They Now special, Sam took Stephanie back to the gym on the ranch and popped the question. Of course she said yes!

The couple has faced struggles in the seven months leading up to their big day. Last September, Sam suffered a life-threatening fall from a four-story building, but quick medical attention and on-going care that took him from ICU to a rehabilitation center has him back on his feet and ready to say I Do! Fans across the nation held digital vigil as Sam made a triumphant recovery, and Stephanie frequently expressed her gratitude for the support.

Their wedding site doesn’t reveal too many details about the big day. However, Sam’s accident rearranged their priorities. The couple says:

The Roots Playlist for Jimmy Fallon’s 5K

Yesterday Jimmy Fallon more or less announced he’s going to take on a 5K. We love this news! For new runners, it’s an excellent goal to set for yourself. Those 3.1 miles aren’t extreme and are completely manageable. He’s doing it the right way and seeking out a little training guidance. He asked Twitter which app he should use and the unanimous vote was for Couch to 5K, our choice, too.

Jimmy already tweeted that he might give up. We think that’s nonsense. So, to keep him motivated, we’ve come up with a The Roots playlist. He might be able to slow jam his way through the news, but he’s going to need some bumping beats to carry him through a 5K.

The best runners have a little support from their friends, and what better support than music from your very own house band?

Jimmy, load up your iPod with these songs* from The Roots:

How People’s Most Beautiful Women Stay Fit and Healthy

Today, People Magazine announced its annual list of the World’s Most Beautiful Women; the magazine hits newsstands tomorrow, April 27. Gracing the 2012 cover is new mom and Hollywood super star Beyonce, who will be joined by nearly 180 other women who define beauty.

The top ten list includes some of the biggest television, music, and movie stars of the past year. What we like about all of them, including Miranda Lambert, Charlize Theron, and Christina Hendricks, is that they all embrace fit, active, healthy lifestyles. None of them are doing anything too extreme and all trying to practice moderation for the most part, not an easy task in the land of indulgence.

We’ve rounded up the diet and fitness techniques of this year’s top 10 most beautiful women.
