Exercise Cures Your Pain

Welcome to Diets in Review! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If you think exercise is a pain in the neck, you have it backwards. It’s exercise that cures that pain in your neck. With people spending more and more time in front of the computer in the age of the Internet, people struggle more and more with pain in their necks and shoulders. Not to mention, ouch, those carpel tunnel issues in the hands and arms (I speak from experience). Here’s more on the research.

Start exercising with a great fitness plan from Jillian Michaels or Curves.

Websites Promote Anorexia and Bulimia

Do you know what a “pro-ana” website is? It’s not new, but the idea is considered just as dangerous as ever before. Pro-ana is short for pro-anorexic. As crazy as it sounds, yes, there are websites that promote anorexia as a good thing for some ungodly reason. It’s thought that there are over 500 pro-ana and pro-mia (pro-bulimia) websites. It’s because of this that opponents are working with social networking websites to combat the phenomenon. More on this subject here.

Feng Shui hits McDonald’s

First non-fat cappuccinos and now feng shui. At a McDonald’s in Hacienda Heights, California, leather seats, bamboo plants and trickling water fountains have taken the place of the usual plastic booths, tables and swivel chairs in an effort to create a soothing setting so that diners will enjoy their food more, linger and come back again. This is part of a plan created by the McDonald’s Corporation to attract more customers and target a variety of audiences. And apparently it’s working. Small survey studies done at this McDonald’s indicates that the results are positive with customers feeling more relaxed and happier. It’s an interesting and creative endeavor on McDonald’s part, but I can’t help but wonder if this move in design will last and if it will force a change in menu such as the addition of herbal teas alongside its new coffee bar and traditional fountain drinks?

Jared and Subway celebrate 10 years of weight loss

Jared Fogel, the “Subway Guy”, is on a nationwide tour promoting 10 years of maintaining his nearly 245 pound weight loss on what is now known as The Subway Diet. Amazing. He’s currently on a nationwide tour supported by a national campaign from Subway to celebrate and promote the achievement. You can sign his pants as a testament to your own commitment to follow a healthy diet and enjoy other interactive activities on the Subway site.

I’m really proud of him, and equally proud that Subway is beginning to take a serious stand in promoting healthy dining options. The new kid’s meal is terrific: Mini sub, raisins, yogurt, and low-fat milk. Subway is a healthier option than the USDA-subsidized school lunch your child eats everyday, and that was before the beef recall.

Diets In Review congrats Jared on such a monumental achievement in health and weight loss- and wish you luck in your continued efforts and success.

Shopping Smartly

We all know that one of the gravest diet sabotages we can commit is to go into a grocery store with our stomach’s growling. Everything from boxes of sugary cereals to the fresh-baked muffins in the bakery department mysteriously land in our grocery carts. One way to prevent this is to eat a little something before you go so you’re not pushing two carts full of food by the time you reach the check-out lines. Another surefire method to prevent impulse buying is to create a shopping list before you go and stick to it as you meander in and out of aisles.

If you have a shopping list of danger-free and healthy foods you’d like to share, let us know!

Jenny and the Queen

As Kirstie Alley steps out of Jenny Craig’s spotlight, Queen Latifah is stepping in. She’s the third Hollywood star to use the betterment of her own health to pitch Jenny Craig’s phenomenal weight loss program (along with Valerie Bertinelli) in an ad campaign that began roughly three years ago.

In Queen Latifah’s new Jenny Craig commercial, she talks about not watching the number on the scale, but just being more aware of her overall health and weight. She is recommending we lose 5-10% of our body weight and increase activity to lessen our chances of weight-related illnesses like type II diabetes.

Queen Latifah is one of the most inspiring women of our day, and I’m anxious to follow her progress with the program as I know she’ll be a heroine to many women struggling to, as she is encouraging, take that first step toward losing weight.

Call 1-800-Kirstie

For the past three years we’ve heard Kirstie Alley telling everyone to call 1-800-Jenny, but this week she hung up. After successfully losing 75 pounds to date with the Jenny Craig program, and ushering in Valerie Bertinelli, Kirstie has stepped away as Jenny’s spokesperson.

She leaves with all positive things to say about Jenny Craig and spokespeople for the company even suggest she’s still committed to the weight loss program.

I have to say- she looks fantastic. I sat at a table near her at dinner a few weeks ago and thought she was definitely looking much healthier and thinner than those obese pictures a few years ago. A lot of people have turned to Kirstie as a beacon of hope for their own weight loss endeavors the last few years- which makes perfect sense that she will be introducing her own branded weight loss program in 2009.

The 57-year old actress is passionate about her new program and isn’t really saying much, except that she is “confident that I can create something exciting and innovative, something that if all goes well, will help change a fat America back into a fit America and will offer this country the healthiest, yummiest, easiest and most effective weight-loss program on the market.”

She’s got big shoes to fill. Diets In Review will of course keep you updated with any news we hear about this new weight loss program. We want to hear from you- what do you think about and expect from Kirstie’s weight loss program?

This Diets In Review post was mentioned here with some other tidbits about Kirstie, Jenny Craig and the new diet.

Satisfy that crunch craving

Any dieter will confess that cravings are their downfall. You want something chewy, or sweet, or salty, or crunchy. And sometimes- you just have to give in.

Recently, an issue of US Magazine featured actress Eva Mendes saying that sometimes, she just has to have Pringles. I’m not sure which variety of the crave-worthy snacks she indulges in, but here is what Calorie-Count showed for a serving (14 chips) of the original Pringles:
- 160 calories
- 11 grams total fat, 3 grams saturated
- 1 gram protein

The nutritionist Joy Bauer suggested to Eva and other crunchy-cravers that they replace the Pringles and other chips with Glenny’s Soy Chips. Actress Terri Hatcher of Desperate Housewives is a big fan, too! A 1.3oz bag of Glenny’s Soy Chips has less of the bad stuff and more of the good stuff, like:
- 110 calories
- 2 grams fat
- 7 grams protein

Glenny’s Soy Chips come in more than one dozen flavors- sure to satisfy anyone’s craving, whether that be salt and pepper, sea salt, white cheddar, barbecue, caramel, cool ranch or even apple cinnamon.

Check out Glenny’s for other healthier snack options like yummy little 100 calorie brownies, marshmallow treats and snack bars.

Buy Glenny’s snacks now and enjoy a 15% savings off your order!

Beef Recall in California

Have you ever thought about being a vegetarian? Would you consider it? You may after reading this story. The Department of Agriculture ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of beef in California due to a video that catches workers doing all kinds of cruel things to cows. While it would be nice to think that the agency is doing it for humane reasons, it’s actually because the behavior raises concerns of how improper handling may lead to possible disease, including mad cow.

Tea Drinkers, Take Heart

There have been conflicting reports on the benefits or lack thereof of drinking coffee. If you’re unsure if you should give up that morning cup of joe, maybe just think about a switch to tea. A new study shows that women who drink tea every day may be doing their hearts a world of good. Sorry guys, no such luck for us.
