The Importance of a Healthy Balance

Not quite a year ago my now 89-year-old mother was hospitalized because she became disoriented. After several tests we were told she had ingested so much water that she depleted her body of potassium and sodium. When she finally came out of it and we told her what landed her otherwise healthy self in the hospital her first reaction was, “I overdosed on water? It’s water!”

Water is a wonderful and necessary thing, but when over-ingested it can lead to serious problems in people of all ages and physical health. What this event reinforced for me was the need for balance. My mother had done just fine drinking water her entire 88 years of life, but when she heard a report on television that seniors don’t get enough liquids she over did it.

This is often the case with lots of us when we hear about the latest miracle diet, vitamin, exercise craze or wonder food. We are so conditioned to believe there is something out there that is going to give us instant and long-lasting results, in spite of the fact that this is completely counterintuitive. Evolution is really the key to creating the right balance in everything and when it comes to health and fitness, your best bet is to sample before you buy!

My friend enjoyed a dramatic weight loss. She cut out all the carbohydrates in her diet and the weight melted away. The problem was that it didn’t stay off because once she reintroduced the carbs into her diet, her intake and weight increased.  Frustrated, she shopped around and found a weight management program that encourages slow and consistent weight loss while enjoying all foods. Today she is at a healthy weight that she is able to maintain because the only real sacrifice she must make is to watch her caloric intake.

By introducing balance in your life, you are better able to manage your weight and your over all health. You also safe guard yourself from falling for all the fads that make many promises that may put your health at risk. Like over doing water. Yeah, water!
