What is it?

Benzedrine is a weight loss pill claiming to be made with a balance of stimulants for intense results. It’s said to be the “strongest diet & energy aid on the market”.

It’s meant to provide a positive reaction in the brain, by stimulating dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. These brain chemicals are used for many important functions, including regulating mood and hunger. This brand is known as an anorexic, and it’s used to help burn fat and stimulate the body, without affecting the heart valve. So is this an effective and safe formula? What do customers have to say about this brand? In this review, you’ll learn all about what Benzedrine can truly offer.

Benzedrine Ingredients and Side Effects
Phenylethylamine Methylsynephrine N-Methyl-Phenylethylamine N-Methyl-Phenylethylamine N-Benzyl-Alpha-Phenylethylamine
Theobromine Alpha-Phenylethylamine HCI Synephrine HCI 5-Methoxytryptamine HCI L-Tyrosine Ethyl Ester HCI
Yohimbe Extract Caffeine Anhydrous Dextrose Microcrystalline Cellulose Stearic Acid
Magnesium Stearate Sodium Starch Glucolate Starch Triacetin Titanium Dioxide
FD&C Blue #2 FD&C Yellow #6 FD&C Red # 40 Silica

Phenylethylamine: Chemical used to help make dopamine and serotonin. When taken via supplement form, it’s often reduced to nothing before it can produce any effect.

Web MD has also expressed concern over the use of this ingredient. According to them:

“Phenylethylamine is POSSIBLY UNSAFE for most people when taken by mouth appropriately”

“Works similar to the drug amphetamine, and may cause similar side effects”

These kinds of effects can potentially include:

  • Rapid heart rate, increase in blood pressure, and anxiety.
  • Agitation, painful sensations, and muscle problems.

Methylsynephrine:  Stimulant drug found in the amphetamine class of drugs. It’s banned by the FDA, and it’s a prescription drug in some countries.

This ingredient raises blood pressure, and is given to people who suffer from low blood pressure.

The FDA has also mentioned that they’ve been aware of 47 adverse experiences from the use of this ingredient.

N-Methyl-Phenylethylamine: Amphetamine based ingredient that is rapidly metabolized. Not much information exists about this variation of Phenylethylamine, though it’s processed in a way to make it more stable.

N-Benzyl-Alpha-Phenylethylamine: Specially processed chemical. There’s not much information about its use, or if it’s safe.

Theobromine:  Stimulant chemical extract which can be extracted from things like chocolate, tea, and kola nut.

It promotes blood vessel widening, heart stimulation, and it’s also a diuretic.  High amounts of it can potentially cause unwanted side effects which include:

  • High blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack.
  • Poisoning, toxic buildup, and ill feelings.
  • Nausea, loss of appetite, and vomiting.
  • Withdrawal headaches, migraines, and headaches.
  • Rapid heart rate, tremors, and muscle spasms.

Synephrine HCI: Stimulant used as a fat burner, it’s more commonly known as bitter orange.

It squeezes the blood vessels, creates a faster heartbeat, and raises blood pressure.  Though it’s used for weight loss, Web MD confirms:

“Bitter Orange is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken as a supplement for a medical purpose such as weight loss”

This ingredient is known to potentially cause side effects including:

  • Migraine headaches, throbbing pain, and headaches.
  • High blood pressure, faining, and heart attack.
  • Rapid uncomfortable heart rate, stroke, and agitation.
  • Insomnia, restlessness, and general fatigue.

There have been cases of people experiencing worse symptoms when mixing this alongside caffeine, which is found in Benzedrine.

5-Methoxytryptamine HCI: Chemical that’s close in structure to serotonin and melatonin. It’s made in the body in low levels.

In supplement form it’s used to help with mood, and to increase heart rate. It’s unknown what the potential long-term effects are. It may potentially cause unwanted side effects.

Yohimbe Extract: Bark extract taken from an evergreen tree.  Though it’s used to burn fat, this needs to be taken on an empty stomach, and it often causes anxiety.

There have also been issues with the manufacturing process of this ingredient. Examine.com adds:

“labeled dose of supplements that contain it often does not match the actual dose”

Web MD has also expressed concern over the safety of this ingredient:

“Yohimbe, taken by mouth, is POSSIBLY UNSAFE”

There have been case reports of people experiencing severe side effects from the use of this ingredient. Possible side effects may include:

  • Seizure, muscle tremors, and cold sweats.
  • Irregular or rapid heart rate, heart attack, and high blood pressure.
  • Kidney failure, organ failure, and other severe side effects.

Caffeine Anhydrous: A dehydrated form of caffeine which is used to increase energy, metabolism, and mental focus.  There’s a total of 200 mg of caffeine per serving, and the bottle advises to start with around 3 servings, and a maximum of 4 Benzedrine pills.

At the maximum allowed dosage, this means one would receive 800 mg of caffeine. This is double the advised daily limitation set forth by organizaitons like the Mayo Clinic.

This high amount of caffeine can cause serious side effects that can include:

  • Rapid heart rate, stroke ,and heart attack.
  • Jitters, muscle spams, and shakes.
  • Seizure, mood swings, and depression.
  • Feelings of anxiety, paranoia, and rapid eye movements.
  • Organ damage, cardiovascular damage, and death.

The back label of Benzedrine also mentions:

“Individuals who consume caffeine with this product may experience serious adverse health effects”

They also add that people sensitive to caffeine should seek the support of a licensed medical professional. Taking this much caffeine even for people who are used to it, may still potentially cause serious symptoms.

There’s also a warning to immediately stop taking Benzedrine if you experience any health problems.

FD&C Blue #2: Artificial food coloring which is a known skin irritant. Much like other food colorings, there’s no nutritional value/.

It is rapidly absorbed by the body, and it can make the urine appear blue in color. Certain people may experience serious issues with high blood pressure.

FD&C Yellow #6: Food dye that’s made from petroleum.  This ingredient has been banned in Sweden, Norway, and Finland due to health concerns.

Some believe that this ingredient may cause allergies.

Benzedrine Quality Of Ingredients

BenzedrineThere’s a heavy use of stimulants which have yet to be proven in clinical studies to be safe and effective. There are also other stimulants which have been shown to be potentially harmful.

The reason why the brand has a long list of possible side effects is due to the concern over safety. Ingredients like yohimbe, caffeine, Synephrine, and others’ have been shown to be potentially unsafe on their own.

The high amount of caffeine can potentially cause unwanted symptoms on its own. When mixed with other stimulants, it’s known to increase the overall effects of these additives.

Due to the high concern for side effects, this is a poor mixture of ingredients.

The Price and Quality of Benzedrine

The manufacturer’s website no longer features this supplement. One 3rd party retailer sells a 15 day supply for $39.95.

Until evidence and clinical studies show whether or not this stimulant mixture is actually effective and safe, it’s unknown what kinds of effects this brand may have.

There’s a high potential for possible extreme side effects.

The company is owned by Hi Tech Pharmaceuticals. Their customer service contact information is:
