Who can forget their first experience watching ‘American Pie’ back in 1999? Yes, 1999. That’s how long this popular, sometimes scandalous movie series has followed the misadventures and awkward sexual encounters of its lovable cast.
And since it’s been nearly nine years since the third installment – ‘American Wedding’ – Pie fans have new reason to celebrate as the fourth movie – ‘American Reunion’ – comes to theaters tomorrow.
So in honor of this all-American movie, we’re bringing you the “Five Things We Can Learn from the American Pie Movies” on this eve of the film’s release.
Laughter is good for the soul. The mood of the ‘American Pie’ films isn’t a somber one, and we think that’s a good thing. According to researchers at the European Society of Cardiology, laughter has a positive effect on our vascular function and blood flow, and can even play an important role in preventing cardiovascular disease. And other research has shown Laughter Yoga to provide such benefits as lowered stress hormones, improved self esteem and relief from insomnia. So don’t take yourself too seriously, because it may just improve your health.
Sexual health is important. Anyone who’s followed the ‘American Pie’ series knows that one of its primary themes is sex, and lots of it. Though it can be an awkward topic to breech, it’s an important one to talk about. In addition to talking to your partner about his or her sexual history, being proactive and getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases is critical to your health. Though yearly checks have been commonly recommended in the past, more recent research has shown that every 2-3 years should be adequate. Either way, know your body and your sexual health, and don’t be afraid to ask your doctor those awkward questions. It could mean all the difference when it comes to a healthy sexual future.
Have more sex. We’re wired to desire and be fulfilled from sex, and ‘American Pie’ is a flagship film for that message. Now that we know how to have healthy sexual lives, let’s have more sex! According to Joy Davidson, a doctor and sex therapist in New York, just a few of the benefits of sex are improved relationships, stress relief, improved immunity, calorie burn, and improved self esteem. Need we say more?
Relationships make life more fulfilling. If there’s something we can learn from the cast of ‘American Pie’ it’s that satisfying relationships make us happy – Jim and Michelle are a prime example of that. According to Harvard Women’s Health Watch, social connections not only give us pleasure, they also influence our health. People in fulfilling relationships have been shown to be happier, have fewer health problems, and even live longer. So don’t underestimate the power of your friendships, as they can benefit you in the long run.
Eat pie! Just not the way Jim does. Part of leading a healthy lifestyle is indulging once in a while. And though eating tons of sweets can ultimately have negative impacts on your health, having desserts in moderation is healthy for our body and your mind. Try this healthier, low-sugar apple pie to celebrate the the movie’s big release. But let’s stick to forks and knives when it’s time to dig in, OK? I think our reasoning behind this goes without saying.
