Jessica Cassity has a green thumb. So two years ago, after more than a decade in New York City, she left in search of a home where she could plant a garden and grow much of her own food. She landed in Portland, OR and found herself in possession of a 100-square-foot plot that produces hundreds of pounds of produce each season. (If you need any summer squash, just ask!)
When she's not in her garden, Jessica might be in at the gym where she teaches a barre class and takes indoor cycling. Or she might be pedaling around town on one of her bicycles, visiting farmers markets, breweries, coffee shops, and the garden supply store.
Before joining DietsInReview.com Jessica was a staff editor for Prevention magazine and a contributing editor for Health magazine. Her articles have appeared in magazines including Self, Shape, Fitness, Women's Health, Family Circle, Ladies Home Journal, and Details as well as in the New York Times. She has written one book, "Better Each Day" (Chronicle, 2011), and is the co-author of another, "Love Your Lower Body" (Rodale, 2014). Jessica is a graduate of University of Illinois at Chicago and holds multiple fitness certifications for Pilates, yoga, and barre3.
I’m not usually a big chocolate fan. Except for when I am. And then… look out! But let’s put this in context: I usually get a sugar craving in early afternoon. (I’m more of a lunch dessert person than a dinner dessert person.) Lately I’ve been buying dark chocolate covered almonds as my sweet treat. [...]
It seems like Jay Bush and Duke the Dog are always on TV hocking cans of Bush’s Best Beans. We love beans as much as the next person—especially with some barbecue!—but a recent commercial gave us pause. At the end of it one mother, who’s watching her kids eat baked beans, says something along the [...]
Almost all of today’s most popular diets are low-carb, high-protein. Atkins has been big for decades; Paleo is an ever-expanding movement, thanks in part to its following of cross-fit fans; and other plans like Dukan, Medifast, and Southbeach aren’t got anywhere anytime soon. But, while this eating formula may result in noticeable weight loss for [...]
Imagine it’s the day you’ve been dreaming of—where you glance down at the scale and have finally reached your goal weight! Celebration is in order. But, if you’re on Jenny Craig, which supplies pretty much all of the food its dieters eat, the thought of learning to maintain your weight while making your own meals [...]
Are avocados going the way of the dinosaurs? Probably not. But guacamole (which is the number one reason most of us eat avocados) may soon be nothing more than a memory, at least for fans of Chipotle Mexican Grill fans. According to recent speculation on CNN, global climate change and California’s current drought may make it [...]
